May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

I may have slipped and put 13 more BBS Marans into my incubator yesterday too. Lol
We need to start cranking out more chicks because all of the places around us that were selling chicks are not now...

We have sold over 100 chicks this month. I can't even keep up.

It has been the same here. Lots of new people wanting to get into chickens but no chicks available. I have 3 broody hens so I'm really hatching for them but if I have a decent hatch I'll also sell some. These are eggs from the same friend that had an invader rooster having his way with the Marans that resulted in a weird genetic issue in those eggs. So hopefully that doesn't happen again...

My friend had a couple cows that were really sweet, the bull actually liked scratches but I did it over the fence to keep something between us to be safe. I don't see many people treating their cows like pets like she did so I was curious if it was a breed specific thing that made them so sweet.
Finn is not a fan of scratches, but he'll stand by the fence all day for treats! :lau I only got him last spring and he was pretty big already. I wanted one who would not think of me as a member of the herd. A little wariness is a good thing in a bull, or so I've been told.

Peeps around here don’t want chicks, they’re all looking for RTL or adult birds. They also assume that anyone with chickens must of course have a rooster, and subsequently fertile eggs; those ones at least are willing to put in a little work and start their own. of course they all missed the boat on ordering from the hatcheries, who are all limited in the number of shipments they’re sending. We don’t have TSC here, and our feed stores are agents for out of town hatcheries, so not really many choices. 🤦‍♀️ I have to look at it as a chance to educate those who don’t know, but it wears thin pretty quickly when every other phone call at work (vet clinic) is someone wanting birds. or having problems with pigs that they‘ve impulse bought and have no clue how to deal with. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m hopeful that some good may come from this pandemic in that people who otherwise would never give it a second thought, is now learning about where their food comes from!

I'll be adding 24 maran eggs on Thursday. I cannot wait to see them. They will be black copper and blues 😍
I love how dark the eggs are with the black copper but love the look of the blue. I just hatched come black copper and lav. Ameraucanas split dozen so I can make some olive eggers next year. I love having different colored eggs ❤

I'm giving a few of them to one of my friends because he wants some chocolatey egg layers 😁 I can't wait to see them

We have Angus/Gelbvieh cross cattle (around 200 of them) and we train our cows to eat distillers cubes (aka cow cake) out of the back of the pickup so they will follow the pickup when it is time to move to a new pasture. Some of them (especially the ones that were bottle babies) will eat out of our hand. They can get a little snotty about their cake, but as long as you are always paying attention to what they are doing/how they are acting we are fine. We can walk around them and scratch the ones that were bottle babies. They bulls we are much more cautious around. They don't eat cake from our hands....or from the pickup. It is all in how the owner works with them when it comes to tameness.
