My lil franken' babies (barnyard mixed) are due on Wednesday. I have an overachiever though, it has decided to externally pip this evening. I only had 2 babies survive from my last hatch and originally had no plans for another hatch this year but something got my roo so I wanted to hatch a few more of his babies if possible. So who else is due to hatch this week? Sunday is day 21 for me.
X2, what Cluckie said.I don't usually do anything differently for my wonky air cells. I just keep an eye on them, especially during hatch to make sure that it does't hinder their ability to hatch. Most of them hatch without assistance in my experience.
I also have some due this weds under a broody hen> not sure whats going on under there though ..lol..wish i knewMy lil franken' babies (barnyard mixed) are due on Wednesday. Ok lovely people, I have a question. First time hatching shipped eggs. Just did 7 day candling on 16 silkie eggs. One looks to be infertile, 13 look great and have veining and nice aircells. 2 have "funky" aircells, not quite saddle, more "heart" shaped after I outlined them in pencil. The embryos appear to be developing in these eggs as well. Should I do anything different with the 2 "funky" eggs? I have read different threads here, as well as the articles, but I am not sure what to do with these two now 7 days in. I am hatching in a Brinsea Max II with auto turner.
Thanks so much for any advise you wise owls may have!![]()
Thanks the Brinsea rolls the eggs back and forth. It has different settings so you can have it roll every 45 minutes up to every three hours. The eggs are laying on their sides. I do have an extra incubator though that I can put them in!I have had some with partially detached air cells in all different shapes. If they are really bad and you have a place to do it, you can incubate it upright in an egg carton (or partial egg carton). I have a separate small incubator (like $30ish off amazon - Janoel 12) that I use for my special treatment eggs. If they are not too bad, you could probably put it in the turner. I am not familiar with the Brinsea incubators, is it a vertical egg turner or an egg roller? I have put eggs with slight air cell issues into my hovabator with egg roller and have hatched just fine.
Geez, the deformities sounds awful! I’m really surprised that our fertility has been so good! Larry, our 2 yr old BCM roo, was only recently added to the hens, and he looks like a ridiculously incompetent roo at mating, but all of the eggs were fertile! Someone said that the bloom of BCM interferes with water loss from the egg, so I expected I might have a small air cell/wet chick in our eggtopsy, but that wasn’t the case. Do you see them pip through a blood vessel at the air cell membrane and bleed out very often? I’m wondering if I can tell whether my vaccination technique killed that chick or if it pipped through the vessel...Glad I could be of assistance!
A couple months ago we were ALL having bad luck hatching Marans but I've also had 100% fertility / 100% hatches from Marans so it's a toss up. The Marans I currently have set are from the same flock that I had 100% from last year but this year 2 of my worst hatches came from them. Low fertility in the first round and on the second round I had a couple terribly deformed chicks. Like nothing I've ever seen before. I've had several Marans quitters in the current batch but if I end up with any more deformed chicks this time I'm going to have to take a break from them unless I try another source.
