May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

@TheBajan They actually look okay to me. As someone else said, maybe a touch on the small side but not horrible at all. They'll draw down soon for hatch. Soon after, they'll internally pip. Some time after, you'll begin to see external pips. That's when you need the humidity up. If you can keep checking, you can wait 'til then to add some warm water. If you can't do that, it's fine to add the water on day 20 and lock down.

Thank you all for you input! I just put them into lock-down. I will wait for the first external pip and then gently raise the humidity. I'm afraid to make a drastic change at all once. I don't know if it matters or not but it just seems more natural to raise or lower it gradually. This morning the water pan was dry and the humidity was 36%. I transferred the eggs from the turners to hatching boxes and added about half a cup of water. Now the humidity is at 41%. I'll try to keep it there until the first external pip.

Bittersweet this morning, only 1 turkey hatched last night. The hatched turkey rolled Franken-turkey (the turkey I didn't rotate) upside down and there was apparently a lot of jelly left in the egg so he drowned :(. I assume from not turning during incubation because the other was perfect. So this accidental no turning experiment was a big flop. If I were awake I would have been able to intervene. The turkey poult did develop properly even without the turning, it was the majorly sticky chick jelly that did it.

On a positive note I have 16 cute little peeps in the brooder for the turkey to hang out with. lol
The solid black chick is definitely an imposter and not a Millie.

Just saw the craziest thing ever...

I was wondering why a certain chick couldn’t get out when it was good to go. So I looked and it’s intestines and liver were wrapped around it’s neck strangling it 🤯 I quickly went to action and freed it then I had to carefully put everything back into place. I’m not sure if it’ll live. It’s head is swollen from the pressure of being strangled. It honestly looks like a bobble head because of it.

I couldn’t get pics because it wasn’t pic time when I saw that. It was close to ripping all its insides completely out or dying from lack of oxygen.

It was like when a baby has the umbilical cord wrapped around it’s neck.

I used my handy dandy knitting needle, qtips, and triple antibiotic ointment. These 3 things always save the day!

I will be keeping this chick and not selling it because if it continues to thrive, I owe it the pleasure of living at Fort Cluck.

Checked this morning and so far have 7 good looking chicks under two mamas. Last night I found a dead one, the first egg to hatch with this hen, it did have some damage but I’m not sure if it was just birth defeat or the hen. Never the less I took her other pipping egg away and gave her some the eggs that aren’t ready or aren’t going to hatch. The hens went broody without me realizing it (kids gathering eggs) so some of the eggs aren’t on the same time frame. I am able to check on her every few hours so I’ll just use her as my incubator I guess.

Oh my gosh! That's insane! Yikes, I hope baby can absorb everything properly.

I'll take better pictures tomorrow but 16 sweet little peeps hatched and the last Silkie is finally hatched and drying off in the incubator! All should be Silkies and Millie Fleur D'uccles but I think I have at least one more impostor because a Millie hatched out black, lol. I've been batting a thousand with these sneaky roosters lately and the breeder said a neighboring cochin took a liking to one of her Millies. lol :lau

Also both of the turkeys are pipped!

So on the millie's, do you know if they breed true. I just hatched out some of the golden neck d'uccles and half of them have the mille look. My neighbor gave them to me and told me that the golden necks didn't breed true, was just wondering if that is the same for the milles.
