May hatch-a-long

Pics
Five out, three pipping, one unclear, one blank. Not bad for a first-timer starting with nine eggs.

One of the out chickens died upon being moved to the brooder. I think the problem is our temperature controller was under the smaller heat lamp, and they got too hot. Another looked bad. Moved everyone back to the incubator.

Took down one heat lamp, moved the temperature controller. There seems to be enough room in the incubator, and no one is complaining in there, so I figure we leave them in there until tonight.

Last night we watched one actually hatch. It was pretty cool.

I've considered trying some American Bresse. I inquired about hatching eggs last year before focusing on Marans. Are you raising them more for meat or eggs? Are you pleased with their growth rate?
This will be my first time having them. I am raising mainly for meat. I am mainly trying to raise them to enlarge the breed. All the heritage breeds I hope to perpetuate as there are not many heritage breeds in our neck of the woods.

Do you keep the chicks or give them to the students?

Both..LOL! I don't keep the quails..but I have Friends who do. I would LOVE to keep ducks, but they are very messy and we are not set up for them....yet  so we keep some of tne chicks and find homes for the rest:D

I love cochins! I have three LF gals and they are so adorably round and fluffy :love My barred cochin hen is the one currently sitting on eggs. It is a first time hatch for her and me!
