May Hatch-a-Long!

Pics
wow... it has been a long night! 2 chicks were out around midnight when I fell asleep, more were out around 5am when the POWER WENT OUT in my house! OMG can't believe I woke up?

I ran an extension cord from my car using a power inverter from the cigarette lighter until it came back on at 9am. I also have a 2nd incubator, which I allowed to cool down since I didn't want to combine those eggs in a high humidity environment (or open the hatcher). it was off for about 3-4 hours, I covered it in blankets to keep it warm, I don't think cooling should hurt anything.. they are d14.

the 1 week old chicks in the brooder didnt like it either... they were chirping loudly by the time it came back on!

anyway we have 7 babies out! and many more are pipped :)
Our power went out too! But I was asleep! I woke up to flashing clocks! I jumped out of bed. I have no idea how long it had been out. Hurried and turned my eggs, they felt warm. The little ones I have in a brooder were hudled under the light .. standing, so I am guessing the power had just come back on. Man, it isn't too hard on them when they are already pretty much developed..mid way and all..but I have some in that are only three days along. Hoping that power wasn't off too long.
Glad your eggs are on day 14! Bet they are fine. And, look at all of those cute babies! Still hatching right?

I had two Barred Rocks that never went broody. However, one of them is now 7 years old and lame. I put her in our large brooder pen and put 10, five week old Silver Laced Wyandottes in with her. At first she wanted to peck at them but by nightfall that same day they were under, around and ON Top of her.

She's been with them for 5 weeks now and played mother to them very well. They are now turned out with the rest of the flock and she can't keep up. I plan to put her back in the brooder with 5 Lavender Orphingtons.
She's happy and has a job and is protected from the roosters that tend to take advantage of the disabled old girl.

This is Ethel with her buddy Lucy when they were a year old. Can anyone tell me how long they normally live?

how scary! I would have never thought to do that! we had a horrible storm last night and the TV lost signal.. usually when its that bad we lose power too.. but we didnt thankfully!

and how cute! I love newly hatched sticky chicks!!

(but I could do without the smell!!

hah they don't smell! at least I don't think so anyway? and thank you! I actually bought the power inverted when I bought the incubator almost 1 year ago. first time I have had to use it, soo glad I had it!

1 thing I did wrong with the power inverter, it only goes up to 75w and each incubator (without turner) takes 40w. so I can only run 1, not 2...

OMG! I hope your day 3 eggs will alright.. I am sure they will be fine.. just tell them that their broody hen had to get up to run an errand for a little bit, no need to panic little embryos!

they might not but the smell in the incubator gets me! I have to lean over to look at the eggs through the further window and when I get a whiff out of the vent... YUCK!! its 10X worse if I have to open it!!

OH!! Yippee!!! I must not have any new ones today.. the kids havent called all excited..
