May Hatch-a-Long!

I hear cheeping in the incubator! Can't see anything through the vent holes yet but I'm still hopeful. Surprised to hear it on day 16 (quail) as the temp has been running low this week.

omgggg it is at this point where I get NOTHING done! cheep cheep!

I just had to assist two out. They had both gotten stuck. the one once I got him unstuck he did well on his own, the other one I got him unstuck and saw a bit of blood and I think yolk. He went back in the bator until he warms up a bit.

if there is still yolk, he needs to sit in his egg a little longer. if the top of the shell is off already, you might be able to keep him inside the shell with a warm wet paper towel wrapped around/over it, like the membrane would be. stay in there little guy!

if the yolk is unabsorbed, then the navel may be unformed like this:

and this is why he needs to stay in that shell longer

Hehe. As a newbie to this, I have this to say to other newbies to incubation. After you sit there and STARE for a day or two waiting for even a wiggle (and seeing imaginary wiggles)..and after you sit with renewed intensity when you actually see a PIP....and if you should get complacent after four or five hours or so staring at the pips...I tell you this: If you go out of the room for even 5 minutes, or if you spend a few minutes IN the same room busy on the keyboard there...and THEN look again...a chicken will have just hatched, and you've missed it. Right?

What are you hatching?

some of everything! haha. the day 16's are mostly mixed breeds, some mottled javas, EE's, and cornishXwyandotte... hatching these for a friend. and 2 of my own eggs, black copper marans x wyandotte

the day 9's are also mixed breeds, lavender marans Rooster crossed on: marans, rocks, orpingtons. had some bantam auricana eggs in too but they are not developing, giving them til day 10 to show signs of life and I also have another 2-ish dozen of MY eggs in there, black copper marans x wyandotte. and a welsummer x wyandotte might have slipped in there too.
oh and I also might have incubated some REALLY small BLRW pullet eggs from my flock heheheh I know I shouldnt have..... I need help!

haha that is TOO TRUE! I swear, the ones I watch will take agonizing hours to hatch. I go and find something else to do for a little bit, and a whole chick has hatched who didn't even zip before I left! how the heck.....!

I left him in the shell. He had been in the same position for the past 24 hours. Beak and head out of the shell. but was not able to move on. I just unstucked him.

okay good job sounds like you are doing everything right! I hope he absorbs it all and pops out when he's ready

The poor thing's head was glued to it's wing. a bit of warm water and he was able to move about. Not sure how that happened humidity has been 85 to 90 % and jumps to 94 to 96 % after one pops out. This has been the weirdest hatch I have ever had.
