May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

Betty, the avatar, is half sussex. Her sister Doris was a Coronation and they were best buds until we lost Doris to an attack last fall. She was the tough gal that would always stand up to yard invaders. Turkeys, squirrels, baby racoons, other birds. We miss her. She was not SQ, but she was special to us.

i bet you do ,,,, i cant stand to loose any of my birds they all are part of the land scape here,,, my light sussex hatch is gonna be a bust the flock they came from has a obvious fertility issue i candled all 18 last night and 16 are clears the other two are a toss up so it dont look good for my sussex i guess i will start searching for coranations for my july trip

Those looking for RIR's if you are local enough I have 5 ready to go and do not need heat lamp, they are 6weeks old. 3 roosters and 2 hens. HRIR's from horstman poultry. I'm located in North Eastern Ky.

OK i can see this 17 inch screen i cant see the phone till after a cup of java,,,,,, any hoot i can say with out a doubt that there will be no light Sussex birds in Costa Rica on this go around all 18 are clear with two a lil to dark to call for sure but if the others are any indication the Sussex i so wanted are a big fat bust ,,,, the momma curry eggs lol my lifelong best Friends mom 5 ee and 5 cream leg bars are a toss up the dark green ee,s are too dark but it looks like only two are developing the leg bars are a bust with two ringers and three clears they are all young birds in there first laying cycle and the shell quality is horrid they look like a porous sponge but these 10 eggs were last minute fill in,s and had been refrigerated for about ten hours before packing and my flight home, OK so lets reflect that's 28 down i only removed two last night that looked funky as in really funky the rest i will cull at next candle day 16 ( we all know that hope thing) now we move on to bator two the German new Hampshire's and silver laced wyandottes the Germans are some of the most active embryos i have hatched in a long time these guys were just having a egg shell smash dance at day 8 out of 18 13 are moving on I'm eggstatic as these are the birds i need for my breeding program so a breeding trio is a good possibility at this point

the silver laced look good as well out of 18 i have 11 with good movement and solid development so again a breeding trio is a possibility for the silvers at this point in retrospect 24 are moving on to day 16 candling so i am at about 47 % on all the immigrant eggs i flew down and set may 1st I'm bumming about the Sussex but I'm sure the problem lay in the barn yard and not in my transport and incubation all the air cells look text book no wonky or detached on setting day and on day 8 they are growing at the correct rate so there ya go 300 miles on the ground in Ohio and 6000 miles in the air so going into day 9 at 47% is not too bad,,,,,,, still bumming about my Sussex

Finally! I've beeen waiting on your candling results, haha. Sorry about the light sussex, that really sucks. Anyhow, 47% is not bad at all! At least it looks like you're getting at couple of breeding trios out of the hatch

I did my day7 candle-and-cull yesterday too, and out of 20 hedemora eggs I now have 13 eggs still going - but 7 of those 13 were remarkably still.

I also have 5 bufforp-eggs in, and they're all developing nicely. The baby peeps are also coming along really well, I love seeing their grownup-feathers emerge.

lol yea guys I'm sorry about the suspense I'm not about drama lol,,,,,,but it took me a while to get through them all and some of the iffy,s i tend to be anal and lookie look, how is your lil special chick doin ? still sleeping with you haahaa ,, i am happy for the out come considering the travel i know the pressure differential on the plane will play hell with the air sacks but they all look great, so i dont hold my self at fault this has been a heck of a journey and to have what i have at this point is a success all my Friends told me i was crazy and would never be able to travel 60000 miles with eggs let alone try to hatch them but when i get started on something i try to follow through,, I'm happy all you peeps and eggs are rolling along you had said you were due for some surgery i hope it is nothing to serious

Dang That is a shame about your Sussex. But you are correct. It has to be a fertility problem on the farm end. I think there is a roo who needs to be culled. That is if they are usung the eggs for hatching. Sounds like the Germans are gonna kick butt!
