May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

I am near in tears here not knowing what to do to "help" - well I know about intervention but rather chick baby did it herself! (Am calling it a girl because last time they were both boys and I had to give them away!) Ahhhhhhhhh the wait is killin me! I was glad to have gone out for the day. OMG how long should I leave it ?? what about the others??? I am like a headless chicken here! My mother hen instinct is in overdrive!!!!!

I had a chick last time that was far more vocal than this one and it was pipped about 3 am one morning but when we woke up it was dead???? I am soooo worried it will happen again.
Isn;t this terrible I am a complete wreck - it was so much easier when my grandbaby was born!!!!! No shells involved!

My wee one has just burst the membrain and a little more shell came off. I feel a bit better now the membrain is breached as it can breath! Can hear it chirping.

I woke to two out of eleven chipping away. One i can hear and going fast. this is killing me. How many will i get.

[COLOR=800080]I am so sorry about the loss of your flock.  That is my biggest fear.  We have the normal predators, coyotes, raccoons, fox and possums (none seen on our property, yet) but the dogs are the biggest issue.  We live in a rural area and for some reason people that live here believe they do not need to keep their dogs on their property and they are not accountable for any destruction by them on others.  We have a farm down the road raising cows and horses.  They have lost a foal because of a neighbors dog. My husband had one come up on him at our farm and it was growling and had raised hair on its neck.  He picked up a 2x4 he was working with and ran after it.  We are looking to get a LGD for our property.  We are looking for either a Anatolian Shepard or a Great[/COLOR]

That sounds a lot like our place! I worry about coyotes, hawks, even a sneaky possum we saw one night on our property. But the worst is the dogs around here! We try hard to not let our dogs leave our yard (we have 40 acres but don't even want them off running through it) but some people around here don't even care and let their dogs just roam!

Yay Oes!! My best advice is to leave it unless it looks like it is really struggling but is stuck. Blood means it is not ready! Tempting as it is you can make it worse. I have 2 half hatched that I'm waiting on right now and its sooooo hard to not do anything so I'm just online with you guys. Lol If the membrane looks good it should be ok. If it starts to look dry or you have a problem with humidity you can take 1 or 2 paper towels, dampen them with warm water and wrap the egg with it carefully. That will help it from drying out.

We took a little of the egg shell off and the membrane was very dry so did the paper towel thing and hopefully that will help it along as it did seem to be struggling. I thought the membrane was ok untill we took a bit of shell off and it is dry! I hope we are ok this time round????

Yay! I'm glad you have a late arrival! Sounds like the incubator runs cool!!! Good luck hope she's healthy and has a sister soon!

So i have my babies outside cause they were 4 weeks old. to have lost two of them i read a little and just found out that they need to be with light and indoors for 2 months

I feel so bad for the ones that died. This is coming so hard for me because i like hatching and seeing them run around but hubby dont like the smell inside the house, and the garage is just too hot for them. help please

My first batch of chickens was outside from they were 1,5 months. They did have a heatlamp though, so maybe that could be your solution?

Oh my gosh! You have a chick!

What a wonderful suprise! As long as you're not afraid to help it if it doesn't make it out of the shell on its own you should be ok this time around. Shrink wrapping isn't really a problem when you don't have like 50 chickens to incubate and can monitor and help when needed - it doesn't kill them, but they will need help to get out of the shell. It's easy to assist a chick in hatching, as long as the chick is ready. Keep us posted!
