May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

a little black and yellow one hatched this morning!!!
I think its a roo, cause it has quite a bit bigger comb then the others :)
he has a little bit of membrane stick to his back, should I take it off?

thats what the van has, an inverter. i dont have a separate one...i even considered putting the incubator in bed to keep it warm!! haha... these are things we never considered before. last summer we had a similar bad storm and were without power for 3 days...so I was a little nervous, but at least they are hatching so if we did, it would be manageable i think! i've been trying to convince DH we need a generator since we lose power a lot...lots of woods and hills and the branches come down all the time...last night was the first time he said.. yea.. maybe we should have gotten one... he's not really into the whole chicken thing.,it was his idea, but he only wanted like 3... but i think now that the coop is almost done and the chicks are hatching, he is softening up a little bit!

awe!! i could tell on the ones my dad hatched as soon as they were hatched.. i was right for all but one...the wyandottes have a big wide comb and the chicks were pretty obvious to me...one of the mutts however, i was wrong, it was a roo, but its comb was like the hens...i wouldnt take the membrane off, but thats just me. one of mine has some and some shell on its back, once it got in the brooder and it fluffed.. it fell off. congrats on another chick!

. Lol too funny he will come around I lived on 40+ acres up in NW Ohio when my kids were young and all were involved in 4h & FFA and we had just about everything imagiable as far as ag projects so we had many many birds over the course of those years the a few years back the wife wanted a few chooks around our place down here her mom raises Cochins so as things go she wanted to out due mom so the race was on and now we bring breeds from the states that are not available here and hatch them out so as fate has it she has out done mom by not just a mile but 6000 miles lol we enjoy the hobby together and have allot of fun with it

i would love 40 acres!! I grew up on what i call.. a petting zoo...not really, but we had a little of everything, chickens, rabbits, quail, guinea hens, turkeys, duck, geese, cows, goats, ponies...pigs.. AHAHA... my DH is kind of a "city boy" so my 3 dogs, cat, fish tanks, koi pond and now the chickens seem like too much to him! i'm not even going to try to out do my dad! he's got 85 chicks right now and 2 pigs...no thanks! what kind of chickens do you have that you cant get there? just curious. i didnt realize until a couple months ago that there were so many breeds! and sorry if this is all one big post again...

so.. i am crazy and ran home at lunch to check on the babies... i get an hour lunch and its a 25 minute drive each way...anyhow... there are 3 more chicks in the bator, 2 zipping and 3 more pipped! none of the marans have hatched yet, but one of them is a pip... : ) i am so happy!

mine are always one big post lol iPhone ,, right now we have a breeding flocks of New Hampshires and Delawares and I just hatched silver laced wyandottes and German new Hampshires I brought from Ohio the first of may I had set 18 light Sussex also but all were clears but one so the next breeding flock on the costa rican block are the silver laced I have four healthy chicks so I will start to breed them as soon as possible to build the flock they are the only wyandottes in the country and the German hamps I brought to improve my line so they will be selected and bred back to my current flock in July I hope to add coronation Sussex and do a rewind of the light Sussex that failed this hatch

OK finally got the wee ones sorted out.

They are in the brood box now so sorry but the pics are all red what with the red light! So here goes ;
The first pic was this and we were so worried about all that blood because it did look a lot. That foot was firm behind his head and he had a big blood streek down his neck for ages where the foot was stuck to his head bless him. But ok now so here he/she is age 2 days! With friend!

This is funny because eggbert is as far away from the light as he can get - he has been quite pampered with the heat and doesn;t value it as Herbert does!
He stays smack under the bulb! HAving been found out in the cold without a mom and then having to come all the way here without a heat lamp he DOES value the lamp much more! much much more!

Eggbert just wants to hop on things and play! and explore the new place!

He loves playing with lego already! He is a very fast learner see the bench S/he just created!

This last one is lovely of them kissing they do get on really well already I think they are glad of company.

I just love this pic the one on the floor is the new guy and the one on the play bricks is Eggbert - yeap he can climb already!
You would not believe it is the same bird that was covered in blood in the first pic!
Oes

I can never tell unless I'm hatching my sex links but congrats and happy hatching
I am about the same way EL. I think and hope but wait til the freezer camp bugle (crow) sounds.

Last night bad storm. No power outage but 1 of my exstention cords failed me. I don't know how long but was in the 60's again, BOTH HATCHERS.

Hoping I didn't get a big stick in the rear with these. If they go I'll prolly be after you and JNJ.
Big bator was fine but 2 hatchers were down. Trying get temp back up ASAP but grrrr I love/hate this hatching. I guess gives me another reason to hatch MORE.
