I haven't yet read the other 9 pages of this thread to see if anyone else mentioned this: but this is GREAT information to know in case of an extended power outage, like after a hurricane.
We typically stock up on canned tuna in our hurricane pantry, but if you want mayo to make tuna salad you need to find a way to keep the opened jar from spoiling. I've considered buying a box of individual mayo packets, maybe splitting the cost & product with a friend or two. But those will eventually spoil if not used after time, plus they have lots of preservatives & junk in them. But oil won't spoil left unrefrigerated, and after the hurricane the hens still will lay.
After Hurricane Wilma we went 2 weeks without electricity. We did fine eating pancakes made with powdered milk & fresh eggs, cooked over a camp fire. My boys still remember it with fondness, and ask "when we can do that again?"
And now I know I can still whip up some mayo by hand, unless I can find a battery-powered stick blender. Thank you!
Thanks for the link, Doubled, I'll put that battery-operated stick blender on my Wish List for next year's Hurricane Season. It will be handy for mixing powdered milk too!
