A small suburban coop of a few square feet, with a 4x8 run, looks merely like a slightly larger cage to the Martian who just landed. The chicken adapts, has adapted since first being domesticated thousands of years ago. Ships under sail in the 1600's kept caged chickens on board for months and perhaps years. None of this particularly new, only the scope of it I suppose.

Ok thats what I figured about the winter months, I cant see your page because of some server error though.
I know an uncertified organic farmer that keeps 800 chickens in 2 12x 24 barns but lets them out during the day year round... the barns had a couple feet of manure in them and it was all wet, I think thats more inhumane then even battery cages. And he sells his eggs as organic...

Those have been in there a while. Look at the litter on the floor. That's dried manure, not dirt. If they had just been placed you would see concrete.

Take a look at the photos on my BYC page, those hens were in there for more than six months at that point. I've had comments about how clean it looks in the photos...

Mac .now all in one post...thats not litter on the floor but dried manure, yellow from dust bath in the dried mature....so not crap proof

This is just part of the cost of an $80,000 hen house for 2500 hens. How many should I put in there? Do I let somebody else dictate the amount to me because it doesn't "look right" to them?

Your chicken are not packed in there , like the other pic....plus have alot more floor space, look at the other post pic with the golden comet. they are even fence out of space under the laying section. i know so they don't get caught in the belts.

just look at the two pics..if the other pic those chicken have no area between each hen, your pic shows alot more space between each hen.
