If I want to order 4 chicks will they just ship those? I understand they may add roosters to keep the others warm

I know that My Pet Chicken.com ships the fewest birds I've heard of, but most other hatcheries will not go below 5-10. If they do then they tack on a "small order fee" of $20-$30...OUCH!!! There has been very little negatively said about MMH so you may be able to. Good Luck!

I think they have a limit you have to order....I can not find my catalog right now, if they send you only a few they add a heating pad or something ridiculous and charge you more...

MM you have to order a minimum of 25.

There may be a small order charge and they will put roosters in anyway. Why not order 8-10 hens of one breed and the rest roosters of another breed so you can tell them apart. Go with a very common breed so they will be cheaper. You can play with your order and see what the difference is as far as ordering the 4 you want and having the fee added on and making your own order up. If you want to end up with 4 hens I would order 2-3 extra because things happen, natural and unnatural causes. Good luck

Since you are in CA cold may not be as much of an issue. Are there hatcheries by you?

I don't know of any hatcheries...we do have feed stores that carry the most popular breeds...i just went on my pet chicken and they have 3 of the 4 i want but can't ship till end of April!! I think you are right aout getting a few of each breed, I'm sure I can always sell a few if it turns out we end up with too many

I want to get the following breeds...just in case there are some BYC members might be hatching some out...

Sicilian Buttercup

Speckled Sussex

White plymouth rock

Silver laced wyandotte

We have 11 other girls and these would make for a very colorful flock!

Is anyone hatching these breeds out, I'm hoping to get them around mid March...

No, you have to do a minimum of 25 from MM.

They'll ask you if it's okay for them to put the extra male(s) in for warmth. You can say no and they won't.

Since they require a minimum of 25 I don't believe they routinely add extra males like Ideal etc. I only had one extra, and it was of a breed I had ordered.

yes i found out it's 25 minimum...i don't mind ordering more but i can't keep them when they get older...

I'm hoping there are some byc breeders that can help me

I wanted less too so I ordered from Mt. Healthy http://www.mthealthy.com/ I ordered 16(15 pullets and one male) and they sent 18.
