McMurray's New Shipping Practices...has anyone heard about this?

I know that sometimes the mail gets jammed up, I still hate it for them. I would've felt okay with a loss or two, but so many? I only ordered 25 and they shipped I think 28, so that's over half gone. I'm supposed to call MMH tomorrow and let them know if I want replacements or what....I know that most chicks go thru the mail just fine, but they are tiny little lives, you know....

Try not to worry too much. Most chicks that go through the post do just fine. You read about the ones who don't, because that is a problem, but truly, they usually do ok.

I too am a little freaked out...I have chicks coming from MyPetChicken. First time I have ordered chicks through mail...I do hope they are fine.

I know how that feels. Couple weeks ago we had a shipment come in and out of the 27 they sent us only 5 were alive. Its hard, especially if it is your first time. Hang in there!

I ordered from McMurrays 2 years ago for the first time ever, not my first time ordering chicks and having them shipped. I ordered 40 assorted chicks from them and only from them because they had a selection bigger than the hatchery I had ordered previously from had. So I paid out the tail for I think it was 30 pullets and 10 straight run chicks...

They shipped them Sat and I got the call from a P.O. worker @ 5:30 - 6am Monday morning. Even the lady at the P.O. goes "I dont think many chicks are alive - the box is really heavy and it says 40 chicks but I only hear a little bit of peeping and I've handled baby chicks before." So on arrival at P.O. i get the box and opened it right there at the back with two P.O. workers watching and 25+ chicks were DEAD not dead and dying but atleast 25 chicks were stiff and dead. Me, and these two ladies all called McMurrays a few hours later when their business hours opened and complained.

I must have scared the guy something awful at McMurray cause he gave me a full refund of my money all 40 chicks dead or alive and the shipping.

I have not ordered from Mcmurray since because within the week afterwards only 6 out of the 40 survived. Also after thinking about it on trash day I run out and dive through my trashcan and find the box they arrived in and the date of hatch was for that THURSDAY, they weren't shipped till Sat at 2 days old and I didnt get them till Monday so they were 4 days old and these chicks hadn't had food and water from day 2-4!!!!!!! Who in the world does this!? I mean really.

You want to talk about mad!?

I'm so shocked!!! I've happily ordered 50+ chicks from MCM the last two years in a row. None were ever DOA and only lost a couple with each order. I've been VERY pleased with MCM and will have to inquire about the shipping changes. THe Post office was great last year as I ordered over a holiday weekend. They called me at 5pm on a Sunday to come to the distribution center to pick up the chicks.

If I have to, i have the luxury of driving to MC Murrary to pick up my chicks.

Will have to watch this one!

I also received my chicks from Cackle the day before Mother's Day and they were all fine. Ordered 20 and got 21 and still have everyone of them. Cackle is a long way from me but seems that I had heard less bad things about them than other hatcheries, so I went with them instead of some closer hatcheries.

Guess I lucked out ordering 30 one day old chicks from Mc Murray and got the call from the post office easter Sunday 7 am to pick them up they hatched Friday all arrived well and alive

3 days later 3 died on me that's all

I'm sorry for everyone that has lost chicks. I have ordered 4 years in a row from McMurry . so out of 100 chicks I have lost one and that is because she just did not thrive . She looked good when I first got her too. All the rest were health. I do have to say I was concerned this year as I got the call on a monday afternoon that they were in. (I contact my local post office so that they know to expect them and they are good about calling me asap) On the ride home my son was reading the box and announced that the chicks had been hatched on Friday...I was worried about them not having water for sooooo long! That was the first order of business when we got home , I unpacked them and my son got the waters already.

I wanted to post on here, since I am dealing with MCM right now regarding my order.

Several months ago I placed my order for 8 WR, and 25 SR of the Special Ass. Bargain chicks. I got the call from the main post office on Saturday night that they had arrived (The shipping date was supposed to be today....

) but that they were not doing well. We weren't home at the time, but were able to pick them up Sunday evening.

I have called McMurray, and the nice lady said to wait a full 48 hours after pick-up from the post office to "assess the damage" (My words, not hers...) since there were a few that were not well and some already DOA....

Anyways, I wanted to let everyone know that you should wait the 48 hours, and then call...and try to keep track of the breeds that have passed. It's fun to try to identify chicks when you get them.....
But not in this case.

And that...Guineas ship on Tuesdays.....I asked since I have an order of those coming as well....I wanted to be ready to get those babies as soon as they come off the plane...(which my post office wants anyways...)

Hope this thread helps others like it has helped me...!!
