Mealworm farming

The main reason I became a member of this site is because I am trying to hatch duck eggs but I real couldn't fine anything on hatching them without a incabactor. Than I found the mealworms form. It was helpful for that.
So thanks.

If any of your chickens seem to be sitting in the nesting box all the time it might be broody (wanting to hatch eggs) try putting the duck eggs under her?

Ordered 10,000 from Rainbow mealworms. We are in Washington so shipping from California only took 2 days. $52 with shipping.

Maybe 2 dozen of the wee beasties didn't make the trip. The chickens happily disposed of travel losses. They are much more active than some I have purchased locally.

Live ones were popular with 14 of 16 peepers. The two Barnevelders kind of stood back and watched. They were too slow to get individually offered worms.

The wife (who's account I am using) was making faces and odd noises as I was moving them into their three drawers. The transfer took place outside.

It started to rain here in the South Sound area of western Washington so I brought them back in. If any of you in the state heard a blood curdling scream around 8 pm, it was my wife when she discovered the 3 year old had stripped naked and had all 3 drawers open and two hands full of worms. I think my ears might stop ringing before the weekend is over.....
LOL you are not Red Rupunzal?????? lol

If you like you can sign the bottom of your posts with a user name of your choice, then we know who is talking you ro your wife. Several couple contribute onthe same acct, and we then know who is "talking."

Your poor wife!! Hope your ears regain their hearing, and I"m sure the 3 year will be just fine! Sorry-- I"m still laughing . .

Omg my worms came today!! ** Small word of advise though... Let your DH (dear hubby) know that you've ordered them so that he doesn't open them and freak out thinking that " whatever you ordered is bad! It's covered in worms!!" Lmba!! He said he now (after 24yrs), has confirmation that I'm nuts!!"

that's soooooo funny! Mine thought I was to when I told him what was in the box when he asked. lol wanted to know the other day why I wasn't feeding them to the chickens. I said I have fed some of them to the chickens but I am trying to build them up right now.

I have what I think is a good container to start my first colony of meal worms. . . . a sterlite flat box. I would like to keep the lid on. DO I need to cut holes in the lid and cover with screen?? For now it is going under the bed and would like to make sure they get adequate ventilation under a dark bed.

( I get the need to drill hole along the sides at the top, though perhaps that is nute of the top has screened areas.)

Box is about 5-6 inches deep.

I would think a screened top would suffice....I have mine in plastic drawer units with no holes or screens and they seem fine...but I only have maybe 3-500 in 3/4" of wheat bran.

ETA...did you decide to hide them under the bed because of company ;) JK
