Mealworm farming

Plus no one on this thread wants to commit us, like our non-buggie friends and family!

Anyone else getting green mold? I was worried before but I have found tonnes of baby worms relishing in it.
AND how does one clean a one tub set-up? Do I wait for the bedding to disintegrate? Do you hand pick out the worms?

This thread has got me into vermicomposting as well. My neighbors think I'm crazy. Next year...BEES!

My subsrate consists of Manno Pro Gamebird/showbird crumbles, oatmeal, wheat germ, sm amt non-fat dry milk and assorted veges. Someone made the remark that they wondered if the chicken feed had insect growth inhibitor in it. Well, i asked at the feed store and the guy said that it did not. That still bothers me and in the back of my mind I still wonder. I'm going to try contacting Manna Pro and ask them directly. Everything was going swimmingly well and then crash!! I did add a larger amt of crumbles to bin just before the catastrophy. Makes you wonder. I'll let you all know what I found out.

I love the Mad Scientist! I love stuff like that anyway but I'm too lazy to do the footwork and I'm so happy hannacat is hehe.

But I do have one going now. I found that moths are laying eggs in my mealworm bins (which are in my house)

But then I discovered that the "webs" are mainly where the mealworms and beetles aren't. Only in the second drawer, in an area that doesn't really have any worms in it. So I've picked up some of the moth mess (they have webbing around their egg things so it's easy to find them since bran and stuff are all stuck to it) and put it where the mealworms are active. In a few days, I should be able to discover if they eat the moth eggs or if the moths simply laid eggs where there weren't any mealworms in the first place. I'm SO crossing my fingers that the ravenous little buggers are eating the moth leavings!

OMG I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've been considering bees as well. And yes, vermicomposting project already under way. I had to finally put the bin on cans that are in little tubs of water to keep the fire ants out (Even in the middle of the garage!!!) but they are now thriving.

Green mold on what? The bin...the veggies....the cardboard? I'd remove everything that has mold on it pronto!

Yep...been vermicomposting for decades.....good stuff... black gold to the garden!

Oops, I didn't freeze (I won't nuke) any of my substrate. It's a mixture of oatmeal that I've had in a sealed container for a while, new organic oatmeal I just purchased and organic wheat germ (I think that was what it was). What do you think is the likelyhood that I have bugs in it?

Am I supposed to remove the dried up potatoes and carrot and greens that are in there? Since they burrow into the potatoes wouldn't I be throwing some mealies away?
