Mealworms at Lowes

How long does wheat meal last? My feed store only sells it in 50lb bags, but for $11 I didn't mind getting it. That's the price of a few cans of worms at a local store. I'll probably stick some in 5 gallon buckets like we do regular wheat.

Wow, this seems really interesting & it seems very easy.... I just wish I wasn't so grossed out by them!

in order for them to smell, you have to seriously NEVER clean their enclosure. otherwise, they are virtually odorless. *they like oatmeal bedding!*

Really though, i never had a problem with them. I never raised them in massive numbers, so i cant tell you beyond my own experience but i used a tub *think shoebox sized tub* and they were fine.

Holy cow! It looks like the Lowes nearby me has them as well. I paid a fortune for a tub of the "premium gourmet" dried mealworms at the feedstore! Thanks for the heads up!!!

They really don't give off much of an odor at all. The colony can stink if it gets wet or the vegetables rot. The $11/50lbs is a great deal on wheat bran. I'm trying to find a local feed store that carries it in those quantities. Fifty pounds is a lot of bran, unless you had a large number of colonies it would last you years. I probably use less than 5lbs/year for my 10 gal. colony. They really aren't that gross. You'd think they'd be slimy, but they're not. They're quite dry, in fact.

I kept a great colony for 3 years or so. I kept them in a plastic cake cover. When I split the colony for my step-mom, mine all died. It was weird. I liked using the cardboard inserts from Digorno pizzas as layers. It made it really easy to get a handfill at a time. I was feeding several reptiles, some frogs, and my skunk. Supposedly, my lory would eat them, but she just looked at me like I was nuts, and screamed until I got them out of there! It was about the time I started with chickens that I lost them.
