What a hilarious (fitting) name.

ok, what is spurring, and are all roosters going to be mean? I swear if one of these baby Banties turns on me, he's spending the night outside the coop to fend for himself! And, if he is a batterer to his babes, can I just lock him up in his own coop?

I'm scared!

I had 2 banty roos in my first batch of clearance chickens. one decided he didnt like my 4 year old - wouldnt mess with anyone but her - he went to chicken heaven

one went thru a short stage of attitude- tried to scare the kid once- one good drop kick later and he doesnt mess with her at all. every time i come in the cage - he tries to get a lil attitude but not much - and when i yell NO at him - he stops and goes back to his girls. he does protect them - have seen him herd them when he thinks there is a threat

my next batch of 7 chicks had 5 roos (possibly 6 - dont know for sure yet) I told my daughter I dont really need a roo - but can probably have 2. my rule is as long as they dont attack humans or get too rough with my girls they have a home - and they will be culled when they break that rule. took care of 2 yesterda y - i know at least 2 more are going to go - waiting to see.... it would be a lot easier to do if they weren't such gorgeous birds.... its a cruel trick of nature that the best looking birds are the meanest - but i wont keep any chicken that doesnt realize its place in the pecking order - and that is below my kid - they get one strike... if they try - i boot em - if they try again - they are dinner

Our little well bred bantam Cochin roo was a jerk. But fine, tolerate him because we didn't have another white roo. He however respected NO ONE and nothing.

He produced two lovely and NICE boys last year. Who will protect their hens, but don't threaten people.

His name is now Cat Snacks.

my grandma had some rir roosters ...when me and my cuz'z were little we'd have to cross the chicken s to get to the woods to play ....those things would chase us and try to kill us . one of us would always trip and one time it was me , they ganged up on me and gave me a pecking you wouldn't believe . I was so scared I tinkled my pants and had to start slapping at them .(think peter griffin & chicken fight scenes with a 6yro girl instead of a fat man ) . This happened one year after my granma's demonised white rabbit (red eyes) bit a hug chunk of meat out of my leg . You can still see my rabbit bite today .

She also had an evil cat who would slap the spit out of your mouth (and leave some love letters on your face my granma as called the gouges ) and demonised pigs
no wonder I hated everything country for the longest time

Ive had a mean rooster before, he was a RIR and (no offense to anyone) we named him satan cause he was just pure evil. Everytime I went outside even if he was half an acre away from me he charged. He attacked me everyday for weeks then one day I forgot me phone and when I went outside he chased me and I got on top of the trampoline and I was stuck there for about 20 minutes and he would run at the spot where when I stepped where there was a bump under me. I had to trick him and run as fast as I could inside. Then, one day he spurred me, not bad cause I had jeans on but it stung. Dad got me a large net and everytime he went at me I plopped the net over him and left him until I went inside. One day mom and I said enough was enough and dad brought him to a flock of wild chickens (dont say anything about it please, I know you shouldnt allow them to go with wild chickens) We havent got a mean rooster since.

Not all rooster are bad alot of us just got unlucky, the best way to avoid bad roosters are
and anyone on the forum could add to the list.....
1. getting a breed that has a good rep for kindness.
2. Spending alot of time with it throughout its life.

All of my roosters were sweethearts up until dearest Nuru, my current rooster. He's fine once you catch him, but if you go into the coop you better bring a towel or he'll probably kick the heck out of you (if you simply hold a towel while you walk, he doesn't see the big amorphous cloth rectangle with feet and a head as a threat). Still, he's a GREAT rooster - small predators and pests he kills, large predators he fights off valliantly, and he is so gentle and giving with his girls. He's the only rooster I've known to even take coveted treats like a superworm, and hand it off to his hens rather than eat any himself.

Old photo of us. He's so handsome!

My mean guy is a little silkie, Jeff (named after a bully my son knows) He only hates me, he will not fight with the other roos or bother my son, he just waits for me and does the dance! Since he is so small, he cant do much damage, but he can sure startle me when I am not looking out for him!

Yup, Cat Snacks was never a major threat, DD3 could carry him by his feet. But when his sons are SO nice towards people also, old enough to be snots yet aren't, why am I keeping the problem child.

Hilarious part was processing him, his sons were dancing around our feet singing and singing for the ladies to come over. They ALL were wanting the processing tidbits.

Weighed .75 lbs after processing, thus he didn't wind up as much more than Cat Snacks.
