My mean roo is still here. I do not send anything to butcher and if he becomes a danger to my other chickens, I will have him euthanized before I ever send him off.
He is a Black Sumatra roo named Ozzy. I got him two years ago from a lady in VT. Normally I prefer to hatch and raise my chickens myself to be very sociable, etc, but they were gonna butcher him, so I jumped at the chance to save him.
He was really sweet at first, I could pick him up and take him inside, cuddle him and spoil him. But after awhile, he got to home in the flock and took over as the head roo and became mean. He has spurred me a few times and did it to me two days ago without provocation. I was just standing there...Lol.
I was considering removing his spur shell with that hot potato thing but then I'd feel bad doing that to him and leaving the full spurs on all of the other roosters, even though they seldom fight. I just dunno what to do with him. But he is very handsome.
Up close and personal, just when he was beginning to show his mean side.
The softer side of Ozzy with his hen love.
