Meat and Layer hen- good all-purpose breed?

Please don't mix in small chicks with older chicks or young (older hens for that matter )hens as they will pick on them until bloody or dead. Keep the mixed sizes seperate. Always get and keep all chicks of the same age.

Here is a good list for dual-purpose chicken breeds.

Just a few off of the top of my head are: Plymouth Rocks, Jersey Giants, Delawares, Javas, Faverolles, RIR, Buckeyes, Orpingtons....

We too are branching into birds for meat and plan to stick with the dual-purpose breeds. Have a roo and a several hens...eat what hatches and save a few for more layers and roo replacement as needed. :)
