Meat breeds

Also with the avatar of the Chicken Hawk...I am a little worried for the safety of my avatar...

Not really....An F1 is simply a cross between any two "pure breeds" For example. A black sex link is a cross of Rhode islad red and Plymouth Rocks(one scenario) Thus the Black sex link is a breed anyone could make. The cornish rock cross of any similar named bird is an F2 Hybrid. A result of 2 F1 hybrid crosses being crossed not Just 2 Breeds. You cannot make this breed at home. The genetics are highly protected by a German company namhed Hubbard ( I believe its German).

not just one company produce all cornish rock......calling them cornish X, leaves out the rock which we know is one ....sure its a boiler type white rock...but still white rock.

f1 and f2 really that a joke....white rock and most of today chicken have more than one breed.

f1 would be off of the jungle fowl.

well sure in actuality all the breeds have been "made" big difference being these birds are 3rd generation off spring. In other word in the commercial world there are huge chicken houses full of animals being bread just so they can be crossed with another cross to produce the broiler......yes the cornish is a part of it. yes the white rock has a part, but so do several other breeds....

The genetics are owned by one company as far as I know and just imagine the $ involve being that thoose chickens account for 99% of all chicken eaten .

We all know that the Cornish X of today is a non sustainable bird for us producers. If there was one breed that you had to raise, breed, choose some to butcher and raise and breed again, what breed would you choose?

i would keep two line of breeders one males the others hen...has been prove many times the cross make faster better meat birds.

yes i would still go with white cornish X white rock hens.

reason cornish have bigger breast, white rock good layer of nice size... white because i like looks of dress white birds better.

no you're not going to find the breeders, used by the big hatchery ..but the cross will still give you better meat birds. than pure breeds.

don't understand why every one is afraid to try to produce their own strain of breeders for the meat birds.

with good record keeping and select breeding it can be done...the market is there if it takes years think it will still be there.

if i was in better health i would myself....produce a bigger white rock to breed to larger cornish...done before can be done again....it was done in my life time. and we know for a fact two of the breeds used.

someone jump on the wagon ,never know in 10 or 20 year you made get a big chunk of that 99% supplying meat birds.

I think lots of people do but you still need to maintain the pure genes as well to have the breeders......A back yard breeder will a looooooooooooooong time to go before competing with the scientists at hubbard. The cornish cross is the most feed efficient chicken ever produced and $$$$ is the bottom line in corporate farms..... Backyard breeders already do produce better quality........the big guys are not interested in that unfortunately

@ Sowdershomestead, I would have to say Delawares, breeder stock def. not hatchery. I have wanted to begin raising these guys, but from what I hear about the hatchery stock is that they just don't grow like a breeder bird does.

Jim Adkins wrote a great article for Acres USA on sustainable poultry. I highly recommend it. he had this to say about delewares.

"Delewares: The Deleware and the New Hampshire were the top two meat birds in North America before the terminal Cornish cross came along. The Deleware is a breed that does not have any real quality stock anywhere in the USA! We are working with two different “average flocks” and seeking to get the birds back to where they once were"

Before the cornish Delewares were very important for meet production.

That is sad.. It is the reason that I haven't bought anymore. I want them as a sustainable flock, but am not willing to pay over $5 a bird plus shipping if it isn't going to grow fast and yeild a good size bird by 16-20 wks.
