Meat: to feed or not to feed? That is the question.

Chickens need animal proteins in there diet, if your not feeding a feed that contains animal proteins in it and your not offering animal proteins to them in the form of meat they will find the animal proteins they need either by bugs that they find or feathers of other chickens around.

Chickens are a omnivore, predator, and a scavenger, they will eat anything that don't eat them first.

Chickens ain't picky. If food don't outrun them they'll eat it.

Wow, eating feathers isn't one I'd heard before.

Feathers are over 90% protein. Some poultry producers include feathers in their feed.

Just make sure you roll it in the dirt first, that's how they like it best.

At least that's how it seems with mine, no matter what type of fancy bowl/plate/feeder I use they prefer to just throw/dump it on the ground and roll it around before they eat it............. Guess they're just adding grit to it before eating it.

I agree with you guys, but I still can't feed my hens chicken... It just seems WRONG.... I know it's my issue, but I'm not doing it... LOL...

There's a thread on here somewhere with a guy talking about how his chickens ate a dead deer in one of his pastures.

They're not herbivores.

If they don't get it from us they get it while free roaming. I have seen them eat mice that they find.

My thoughts exactly! Ours even catch frogs in the field near our pond. It's pretty funny watching the flock chase the lucky hen around while she's trying to ingest the frog.

By the time the others get tired of chasing her, the frogs legs are missing and their isn't much left for the original hunter!

We also throw any meat,fish, & deer scraps out to our flock. They ravenously devour it.
