Meaties and more

Wow they look great! That big one you're holding, is it CX?
Yes, they are the Jumbo CX. I think they were at 9 weeks old at the time of processing. I am holding on to the heritage birds till I have time to make the decisions on who breeds an who feeds. I am also raising some turkey poults for the first time this year. They are about 3 weeks old now, I have heritage bronze and midget white. I will also try to hold some of those for breeding, if I have pairs in the end. if not it will be a happy Thanksgiving holiday at my little farm.

Ok I was going to ask you about the differences in the CX and the heritage birds. I know they take longer to get to table size, but I wondered about differences in flavor and texture. I've not done meaties yet but someday I hope to. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This may be of interest to some. I got tired of my home-made incubator and sprung for a GQF. To test the new incubator, I set some Muscovy eggs and two very special (to me) top secret hybrid eggs. The hybrid eggs were pullet eggs, so I didn’t expect much. The larger of the two was infertile when I checked so I pulled it. Two days ago, I hatched out a hybrid chick from this very small egg.

The roster is a SLB x RIR cross and the hen is a CX. I have this one chick in the house (hubby is very understanding) to give it the best chance I can.

If there is any interest in this I will try to keep updates on this and some other projects of mine.

I processed some of the Dark Cornish roosters the other day, these are hatchery bird so will take some breeding effort. Of the 6 birds I processed, I had a average live weight of 5.11 lbs, and an average dressed weight of 3.06 lbs at about 22 weeks old.
