When I get lots of rain and young chicks are 10 days to 35 days old I sometimes have to treat bouts of cocci infection. Version of cocci I have here you cannot play with when birds are bunched up as losses can be very high where more than half of chicks hatched can be lost. In a pinch I purchased the Country Lane 18% medicated chick starter. The feed is darker and highly palatable even to chicks not feeling well. The intake is high enough that the infections that are noticeable can often be suppressed without lacing water as well. Key I think is how palatable the feed is.

The feed used typically is an open formulation from the Missouri Farmers Coop that does not always agree with my slower growing heritage chickens. I may try the non-medicated Country Lane product even though it has a much higher price.

The cocci differ from place to place. The chickens vary as well with respect to their resistance to given strains of cocci. My game chickens, when in Indiana, had no troubles with cocci. When they were transplanted to Missouri, broods could be lost in their entirety within a week when rains heavy. There is a clear genetic component. Survivors produced much sturdier offspring. Five generations in now with losses much lighter and easier to control with more moderate management methods. My American Dominiques here in Missouri have no trouble, but when my brother in Indiana breeds of the same American Dominique stock, cocci hammer his there.

Chicks doing exceedingly well but the poop is well, special. We got complete suppression of cocci outbreak much faster than I am used to. Feces is darker brown than I am used to with lots of smell. Soon I will switch a couple pens to the regular version of the Layena feed to see how is compares to the regular feed I use.
