Memorials

Once in a while I like to bring this back up, just to see if anyone has any new stories they'd like to share. Anyone? Maybe someday we can write a book (a best seller, natch)

and share the profits.

Oh, and by the way... I was reading through this and realized I never said how my Whitey died. He died while protecting his flock from what we think was a weasel. (We'd had problems with one)...I wrote so much about him at the time in other threads, I forgot to include the info about his death in the Memorials part. He was the best rooster we ever had. People I haven't seen for a while still ask about him.

Do these all have to be about chickens? I'm sure we have all had other species that we miss greatly as well, or is there another thread for that?

Two of my little boys are autistic....

I wanted to get my older autistic boy an autism assistance dog. We tried for over a year to fundraise in order to purchase a trained dog for him....no go. No one in my town had ever heard of such a thing so of course wouldn't help.

I have a diploma in animal science so technically I can be a dog trainer....I looked up the laws....you can train your own dog....ok here we go.

I couldn't afford to buy a purebred pup froma breeder so i went to the humane society not thinking I would actually find what I was looking for....I mean what are the odds of finding a service dog at a shelter?

Nana was way too old (6 ish), fat and slated to be put to sleep at the end of that day. Def NOT what I was looking for. I brought her home anyway.

I won't go into too much detail about her training but sufficed to say that most service dogs (NOT therapy dogs actual service dogs) go through approx. 2 years of training....Nana was 6 months. I named her after the dog from Peter Pan.

Nana saved my son's life more times than I can count....she stopped him from leaving the house, running out into traffic, ect. His first word (at age 5) was her name.

I had to retire her after only 18 months due to her hips going bad. Still in that short time she was able to teach my son to stay with us and not bolt. She taught my 3 yo ( also autistic) how to walk. She would let him grab her tail and would walk real slow anywhere he wanted.

I had to put her down when she started having seizures.

I miss you Nana....no dog will ever live up to the standard you set.

That is an awesome story. Was she a yellow lab mix? Yes, the memorials thread is for anything you want to write about...any kind of animal. So far they are all touching and heartbreaking stories that people have written about their pets.

She looked like a yellow lab mix but she was a pound puppy (dog) so we'll never really know. Didn't matter. She was the best.

Rhino came from the breeder with this strange name. The breeder said they named him that because of his broad chest and tanky look. He was a champion who bred a few puppies for the breeder before my Father in Law decided he had to have a red, male dachsund to replace his red, male dachsund who'd been hit by a car. And Rhino came home with us. I didn't want the dog at the time and for the first few years he was here, he was a royal pain. He hated everyone except grandpa, never left his side, peed in the house whenever he thought no one was looking. After grandpa died Rhino began to learn that life might involve more than just one person. He learned to adapt to all of us, and learned the joys of long walks, chasing frogs by the pond, barking at strangers, rolling in dead stuff, protecting everyone from rats in the barn, rides in the car and playing with Java, our other dog, who helped teach him what being a dog was really all about. He started turning gray at the age of eight and one strange thing about him was that he slept like a dead thing as he got older...you could shake and shake him, and it took forever to wake him up. But he seemed to be in excellent health. Today I came home and found him dead on our porch. We will never know how he died. Rhino, I'm sorry I didn't take you for one last ride.....we all loved you (even me....)
