I have 4 meaties and I'm constantly going between thinking that I will be mentally able to process them and thinking that I need to just give them away. Well, they're 7 weeks old now so I need to figure this thing out, fast.

Kim in Mt. Airy, you want to take a trip to Raleigh to pick up some free meaties?

I just wouldn't think about it. Try not to let the thoughts enter your mind and treat it as if it is doing the dishes...just something you've got to do.

I usually don't get too attached to the meat birds. I just treat them like cows or deer or any other livestock that has to be killed to be eaten. I know the animal is serving a great purpose and it has been treated/raised better than most. That makes me feel better. If one happens to pull on my heart strings...we don't kill it.

It usually doesn't bother me at all though. Just one of those things that has to be done.

My husband shot a moma deer last year and then the baby ran out so he shot it too. I was like "You didn't" but I helped skin 'em and eat 'em. It was delish! My 4 yr. old gave him a high-5

LOL

Good Luck to you with it and just be strong. You can do it.

To be honest when we butchered 2 of my roos last weekend I balled(sp) my eyes out even though the one had spurred me a few days before, I had no problems with plucking or watching them being gutted, but it hurt and I think you just have to realize that you can't keep them and that they lived a live a whole lot better then the ones you buy in the store.

Its just another dirty, distasteful job that one has to do. Like cleaning toilets, changing diapers, cleaning up puke.....it never is pleasant, but you become more resigned to the fact that it is someone's job---yours.

Then, collect your tools, prepare your area and approach it like a dirty job that its best to just get it over with....not thinking much, just getting in the zone of making it fast, efficient and, ultimately, over with as quickly as possible!

Once you do it once, it becomes less emotional and more like any other unpleasant job. Except this job nets some good, tastey rewards! Much better than diapers and puke, I will tell you!

Hmmm...are you serious? The in-laws live near Raleigh....a pick-up possibly could be arranged.

I haven't butchered birds since I was a kid...but what I did was buy a few (16) chickens for a laying flock. Then, I arranged for a farm home that wants bug eaters for up to a dozen or so if there are some of the 100 freezer bound birds I can't part with...

About half of 'em are mean little boogers, and they'll be NO problem to dispatch when the time comes. About 30 of them are cuddle kings, so I don't know WHAT I'll do with them! (laughing). Maybe some will turn out to be pullets! (they're not cornishx so they can have a fairly normal adult life)

You are on the right track...and if you just CAN'T, then trade chickens with someone nearby who is having the same problem!

Kim, why don't you go to Raleigh when Robin's meaties are "ripe" and help her process them? It sure helped me to learn alongside another experienced person, instead of reading the instructions from a book or website.

just a suggestion, not trying to manipulate...
