I haven't butchered birds since I was a kid...but what I did was buy a few (16) chickens for a laying flock. Then, I arranged for a farm home that wants bug eaters for up to a dozen or so if there are some of the 100 freezer bound birds I can't part with...
About half of 'em are mean little boogers, and they'll be NO problem to dispatch when the time comes. About 30 of them are cuddle kings, so I don't know WHAT I'll do with them! (laughing). Maybe some will turn out to be pullets! (they're not cornishx so they can have a fairly normal adult life)
You are on the right track...and if you just CAN'T, then trade chickens with someone nearby who is having the same problem!
