Mentally Preparing For Processing Meaties

Hmmm...are you serious? The in-laws live near Raleigh....a pick-up possibly could be arranged.

Yes, I'm serious. They'll be 8 weeks old on Tuesday, just let me know when you want them.

I'll have to pass. There's no way I can make a trip up that way in the next 3 weeks. They'll be eating you out of house and home before then. I wish I knew someone to suggest who could come over and help you butcher them. ...or who would want them.

Thanks for offering though.

I couldn't agree with you more. We are so torn, wanting to enjoy meat in our diet, but wanting to take responsibility for it, how it was raised, killed, etc. We are planning to get meaties this summer, but we are very nervous that we will not be able to go through with it. How strange that eating "gross", factory farmed chicken from the supermarket is somehow ok with me though. I know it doesn't make sense, but is sure seems easier!

It's okay. My parents' neighbor said he would take them but he was in a motorcycle accident last week and has a pretty bad broken leg, so I don't know how long it will be before he would be able to take care of them now. My uncle has also said he will take them, so I shouldn't have a probably finding them a new home.

I'm so glad that this was posted because I thought I was the only one who felt this way lol
We have 8 meat birds that need to be processed soon and I keep going back and forth emotionally.
I know some people think it's dumb to feel this way, but it's how I feel.
Hubby is going to do the actual killing, I'll be in the house crying lol
I'm hoping once the killing part is done, I'll be able to handle the rest. I'm also hoping that after this first round, it wont be so bad when we do it again.

You will feel better about butchering the meaties once you realize two things. One, that they are not long lived. They will start keeling over on their own before long. You have a choice. Butcher them and put them in the freezer or let them die on their own and put them in the dumpster. Two, realize if they were in the wild, something would be eating them. In a natural environment, very few prey animals, and that includes chickens die peacefully in their sleep of old age. They would end up being someone's dinner. It might as well be yours.

Thanks.
its going to be hard, but I would rather know where the meat is coming from that i feed my family then buying it at the store and not knowing what was done to it before it was wrapped up.
I also know that once it's done the first time, it will be better the next.

I just love this place I'm so glad i found this place.

I was worried about butchering before I did my first one, but the only difficult thing was the actual killing. Once they were dead, the rest was very easy. It's never fun, but you'll love eating all that delicious chicken!! The best part of it is knowing that they had a wonderful life.

Springchicken, did you actually "do the deed" or did you have someone else do it for you?

I feel like I'm on a teeter-totter with my meaties. One day, this is going on in my head... "I'll just let them live out their lives here" and the next it's... "I really ought to process them so they don't suffer and die."
Teeter... Totter...

I feel like I'm on a teeter totter also. This morning I was ok with it, and this afternoon i was crying to my husband about it lol.. my neighbor offerd to come over and help us on the day we do it. But i don't want anyone here when we do because i know the kids and i are going to be crying like babies lol

I love my fat meaties. I love the way they run up to you. Well more like waddle lol
Have you thought about having a butcher do it for you? I know our butcher in town has a truck and they can come out to your place and to the killing and then take the meat back to the shop and process it there. That may be something you'll want to think about.
