I was going to do a little more research and post tomorrow on that thread.

It's a real good thread-I wish others would post their experiences on there. Out of 100,000 members, there should be some people out there who have dealt with Marek's.

My freind raises chickens and rehabilitates and then houses for life rooster ( and most turn out to be just lovely and surprisingly sweet) that lost in the fighting ring but survived.* Because he runs such an open farm he has troubles with diseases. I have started to help him on this but 2 1/2 months ago he had a hatch I wasn't ready for and they did not get vaccinated for Mereks. He hatched 12 and has lost to dte 7. There is another sick and wobbly on it's little legs. When I visit him, I disinfect everything and wash my clothes right away. I also do NPIP testing so it's good practice that I do so I don't spread disease anywhere.

But Mereks can come on the wind so you can't fully protect from it. It can come from dander. It' just best to vaccinate. Although vacciantions are not 100%, it does offer some protections.

*He won't tell me more about where these beat up birds come from but I've helped him when he's called and it's legite. He's not fighting - just rescuing. He won't tell me the names of the people who drop off the birds to him as he knows I would call the cops. He never even culls for food. Hiis birds die of old age mostly.

Are my grown birds safe if I add some with vaccines? I'm sad I did not know they needed to be vaccinated when I got them, wish I had known, but I do want to add 2 more pullets to the flock and only vaccinated pullets ! so will my older girls be safe ? We can loose there girls, there so loved. My autistic son loves his girls and when I told him we would be getting chickens he cried. He is thrilled with them and cares for them like a dotting dad. If one or more was to get that disease I'm not sure how my little one would take it, once he lost a fish and was sad and sullen for days, breaking out in crying spells.
