Merry Christmas, who all got a new incubator?

Did you install as a down- or updraft fan? Most commercial ones, like the hovabator and the little giant, install as a downdraft. I question if that is a good idea. I blows the hot air down the center causing more dry out of the eggs right underneath and more heat towards the center. That is why I never put eggs there. I think an updraft is better so the heat gets pushed towards the sides of the incubator where it tends to be cooler anyway.

i put it up at the top by the heating coils, but i broke one of the blades on the propeller so when i get another one i think i might just set it on the bottom because the only place to put it on the top is right on top of a vent hole and it sucks "fresh" but cool air in and causes fluctuations.

and either way the air will circulate but theoretically the majority of the warmest air is at the top of the incubator and needs to be blown down.

I would not put in into the bottom of the machine, because of water etc. Just flipping it over in the center will do. So it sucks the air up from below and blows it your to the sides circling back down that way. Kind off like a ceiling fan and can pull up the air or push it down. I would simply put some tape over the plug hole and problem solved.

Thats a good idea. When i go and get another fan i'll have to find one different from mine though, the fan itself was completely enclosed in a plastic casing so when it was secured there was no airflow apart from the vent hole moving through it so i drilled out the side closest to the heating coil and that seemed to work pretty good, so when i go i'll see if i can find one that has open or vented sides and make it where it blows up and not down.

What about using longer screws and put pieces of drinking straw, nuts or something similar as a spacer. You only need like 1/4 inch to get the air to flow by. That way you don't have search for the perfect fan.

When I put a computer fan in my Little Giant, I used homemade spacers and the top of a metal coffee can (as a baffle) to allow the airflow to distribute to the 4 sides of the incubator. Simple to build and no additional expense (except nuts and bolts which I had).

Well i'll go and look to find the cheapest one i can and hopefully it will be different otherwise i'll use something for spacers.

KansasKid,

Maybe the following picture would be helpful to you. I mounted the computer fan where the factory fan goes and used some plastic tubing for "spacers" ...then I installed the tin coffee-lid (edges turned back with pliers to avoid "sharp").

Maybe a picture IS worth a thousand words....:

I'm a little confused as to why you put the coffee can lid on the bottom like that, which way is it blowing air?
