Messy Chicks!!! Keeping litter dry?

I used an old sheet set torn into handtowel sized pieces. Several times a day I would remove the soiled ones and put them in a sealed bucket - this really helped cut down on the smell! They soak up any spilled water well and make a soft landing for a sudden chick nap! When the bucket was full I would throw them in the washer.

I use the pellet type horse bedding under the shavings. It absorbs the moister. I just wet it down a little bit and cover it with the large shavings. Mostly just around the water area. No wet area less smell.

Ours were doing the same thing & I took a ceramic dish and propped the water holder up to "beak" level and its cut down on alot of spillage!

I've got my water on an old floor vent with a piece of cardboard on top and unless they get really rowdy they don't spill much i'ts up high enough they can walk up and drink and even my bantums can reach it and i've pushed all the litter away from the waterer

You all have given me some really good ideas for the water issue. I ended up putting mine on top of a 2x6 chunk of wood and a tiny bungy cord to attach to the cage and box. It is high enough that not too much straw and shavings get in any more. I wish I had known about the sand sounds like a good idea.
