Messy Chicks Spread Feed Everywhere!

Well mine are almost 3 weeks and I tried the pie pan trick and it didn't work at all...they still throw it everywhere...ugh! I finally broke down and put it in a show box lid with rather high sides and they do the same as another poster mentioned and love to scratch at it, but at least it stays contained. I think they live for making a mess

They love to knock on the side of the box with their beaks too...heehee.

I use plant saucers, under the feeder and the waterer! Really helps. But they are so cute, how can we possibly hold it against them....... I can't wait for this latest batch to go outdoors!

Since I'm trying to make this whole project only as expensive as what we usually spend on eggs, I can't afford lost feed. Using 4" PVC with a 90 degree at the bottom and then a 30 degree pointed back up will end all the loss. Plus you can dump the feed in from outside the coop if you build it through a wall.

My 3 week olds are doing the same thing but it is darn cute to watch them do the scratch dance

. I am going right now to try the plant saucer and see if that works for me.

I did try not filling the feeder past what the metal feeder can handle and that does limit the billing out.

I'm trying the pie tin idea now. Their figuring out that they need to stand with on foot on the bedding and one on the egde of the pie tin to feed. I'm hoping to not have them waste anymore food than is possible.

When we move them out to the coop in a few weeks I think we'll be looking in the the angled PVC type feeder.
