Metal lath as alternative to hardware cloth?

I just wondered. I have some that I bought quite a few years ago to make cylinders around young blueberries to keep rabbits from eating them to the ground in winter. Its sat out for 5-6 years and has only a few small rust spots where the galvanization has worn off.

Its tough, and its cheap, around $8 a sheet (28 inches x 8 feet, IIRC).

Should work well, but it might be harder to cut than hardware cloth? That's the only drawback I can see.

I found some behind an outbuilding on my property. It works great. Is it really cheaper than hardware cloth though at $8 / sheet?


drawbacks---> it's $#@%ING sharp! I have lots of cuts to prove it.

I had an old piece of it and used it bent/clipped against the run wall as an apron. Works great.

Is it coated? Might be a problem if it's not.

It will work just as well initially. The problem is that it will rust a bit faster then the hardware cloth but should certainly last several years. It is strong and the holes are small enough for needed security. It will work as a cheaper alternative and is far better then chicken wire or chain link fencing.
