As for you question, yes, it is nearly impossible to find purebred chickens in Oaxaca, at least that has been my experience. The local vets will sell "Rhode Island Reds" and "Barred Rocks", but they aren't purebred. Then there are all the fighting cocks and the local mixed breeds, and that is about it. Oh, someone sells Silkies near Tlaxiaco for 100 pesos. And I have some Marans and Easter Eggers.

Yeah, I have a few...originally from Nancy (user "bargain" here on BYC) in Georgia. We've had a lot of problems with disease here. First it was Marek's, Newcastle, and Fowl Pox. We started vaccinating for all those, now we seem to have infectious bronchitis (high morbidity leading to low egg production, but low mortality). Anyhow, I think there are a number of breeds in Mexico, but most folks aren't on BYC! I didn't know about the silkies that are only a few hours away until my comadre was visiting a cousin there who gave her some hatching eggs.

We are near San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato, Mexico. We currently have Silver Campines and a mix of hybrid layers that came from a hatchery near Puebla. Would love to hear from any one raising specific breeds in Mexico.
