Meyer Chicks Arrived Today (photo heavy)

I was planning to work on my run today but it is just too bloody hot to dig post holes. Maybe later in the cool of the evening...

I've noticed that while they still sleep in a huddle in a corner as they did in the brooder they are spending a lot of time during the day up on the roosts. Be interesting to see when, without a momma to show 'em, they start to sleep up there.

I picked the breeds looking to get as varied a flock as I could. Lots of them are looking alike right now but they should get more varied as they get older...and next spring I really want to see the chicks they make!

The (mostly) black and white one in the single photo is Abijah, the rooster.

Awww, grats they are all so cute, even in the ugly stage!

You definitely have a golden comet girl in there, she's the one that is partially red, partially white. The other light colored one is not a comet. It might be a buff Orpington, thought to be honest I'm not very familiar with them. The others are right that your extra is usually a roo, but you might have gotten lucky if you didn't order the Comet, because that's defininately a girl.

Grats again!

I actually ordered a rooster, he's one of my 3 Ameraucanas *see disclaimer*

, the white speckled one in the single photo...I want a bunch of mixed breed, mixed colored next spring! Interested to see what he ends up looking like. I did get the free "Meal Maker" chick and I'm pretty sure she's a Golden Comet, she's the lighter chick in the front in the first photo. It worked out well as she is going to be the only red(ish) hen in the flock.

**(Here's my disclaimer--- I know someone is just itching to tell me that since they're from a hatchery the Ameraucanas are "really Easter Eggers" which are "just mutts". I prefer to think of them as "barnyard quality" Ameraucanas. I have two bassets, both AKC registered but each has some little flaw, a leg too long an ear too short, that means neither is show material. Both are "pet quality". I (and they) could care less. We have no plans to go to a dog show. Stop anyone on the street and ask what kind of dogs they are and they'll tell you "Basset Hound". Same thing in my mind with these Ameraucanas. They tell me they have no show ambitions either although one of the pullets does like to tap dance and hum show tunes privately in front of her mirror....In any case I have 2 Basset Hounds and 3 Ameraucanas and none of them are heading for any show rings!

What a colorful combo you have there. They are real fun to watch at this age. This is the time they are learning to explore their world so add a few things for them to investigate. Mine were fascinated by a large stainless steel bowl, a block of wood to stand on, paper towel rolls to jump on and move about with their feet. Didn't take much to entertain them. I put their chick crumbles in a cut down cardboard box and they spent hours scratching in the food like 'big chickens' out in the yard.

Wow, what an amazing mix!

What is the dark chick in the last picture? She is beautiful!

Blue Andulusian. The other one is a Golden Lakenvelder. The blue is really pretty---she was as a chick too. She even kinda skipped the ugly week.

She's a bit smaller than the others still but bold. Her name is Annabelle.
