Meyer Hatchery 2 questions please

Thanks you all

Im going to call the post office and Meyer today. I think I will just take Tuesday off, I already have Weds and Thurs off so hopefully I should be covered. My other issue is we are expecting over a foot of snow starting Monday night and all day Tuesday into Wednesday!!! What terrible timing.

Now Im so worried my chicks will be delayed and maybe even perish before arrival. Nothing I can do but hope for the best. Stinks though because we really haven't gotten much snow at all this winter. We've had several days in the high 50's even in February and March which is super rare. And now that my chicks are being delivered we are expecting over a foot of snow!!!!! fingers crossed all goes well

Thanks again for all your help

Good morning,

I looked back at my e-mails from last spring and it looks like I chose 4/25 as my hatch date. They did, in fact, ship on the 25th (from McMurray and MPC) and they arrived on the 27th. The company does not specify hatch date, so I can't tell you definitively if they were all hatched on 4/25 or if any of them were a few days older. They all seemed to be the same size, other than the Polish, but that's to be expected because they're smaller.

If I were you, I would call Meyer and ask them to delay your order in light of the storm. My chicks came relatively quickly in spring weather, and I had a few losses. There were 3 DOA Polish in my McMurray order, and I ordered two Silver Spangled Hamburgs, one of which was in bad shape upon arrival and didn't make it through the day. No losses from MPC though. I wouldn't risk chicks getting held up in a snowstorm, personally. I'd be willing to bet the hatchery doesn't want to ship out a bunch of chicks just to have them die either.

USPS regulations require that chicks ship within 24 hours of hatch. So yes, the whole process of hatching, sexing, vaccinations, and boxing for shipment all happens on the same day. Can you imagine the craziness?!

Im in Upton
The sorting facility in Shrewsbury may very well call you asking if you want to pick up there or have them delivered to your local PO. They have called me many times to find out. It often means getting them the evening before they'd arrive in your PO.

Have you seen the Dirty Jobs episode that they filmed at McMurry? LOTS and LOTS of chicks.

I'm expecting an order this week from Meyer too! I'm in South Carolina and the tracking info right now says that a label has been created but it hasn't gotten to the USPS facility in Polk, Ohio yet. It is supposed to be delivered to my work (an animal hospital), but I've called the PO to let them know they can call me if there's going to be a delay. I have my brooder ready in my car to bring in tomorrow morning just in case they come tomorrow! looks like it'll be Wednesday though since they haven't been scanned in at USPS. I wonder if it's because I opted for vaccination and that takes more time?

I got the same exact thing today, too! I'm in WA. I opted for vaccination too, but I'm not sure that would cause any delay. I wonder if the actual hatch date will be tomorrow, and they create labels in advance to save time?

I dont think so because I talked to Meyer yesterday and they said my chicks were at the post office and when they scanned it in at the post office I would receive a tracking number which I did but I I just checked this morning and it still says the same thing...that a label was created but its still in Polk, OH. I doubt that is accurate. I don't think the post office would keep live animals just sitting in the post office for about what would amount to 18ish hours since my label was made yesterday afternoon around 2:00. So I think and hope they are in transit but the tracking has not caught up, I was hoping my post office would be calling me this morning but so far nothing and is 8:00am here. My post office only gets trucks in daily at 5:15am and 7:30am so it looks like I will probably be waiting another day

but I'm really worried as the snow is starting to ramp up now and we are expecting blizzard conditions and 2 feet of snow. Lets update each other as we get information to help each other out Ok?

They skip scanning boxes sometimes. I've shipped things that have literally gone from label created to out for delivery. I had at least one box that the delivery person forgot to scan so it never even showed delivered (which would have really been a pain if the recipient hadn't been honest). I hope they aren't delayed by the weather. You really don't expect to be dealing with heavy snow in March. :(
