Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

:celebrate Sunni drank water on her own!! She tried drinking this afternoon and realised that she could do it. Now every 10 minutes she keeps running to the water bowl to get a drink. I'm so happy! Very proud chicken mommy over here. :love

I checked Ellie today, and she is two finger spaces and she squats every time I walk past her. She should be laying an egg any day now. Lilly and Lizzie (BA and Golden Camp) still have a long way to go yet, but Amber and Daffodil (EE and BO) are fairly close. Those first eggs are so exciting!

So the girls were out free ranging in th shrubs and I'm pretty positive I heard a very dramatic egg song! They are 17 weeks. Worth it to climb around in th shrubs and see if I can find our first (or not!) egg?!

Who do you think was making all of the racket? My Leghorns both started at 17 weeks.

Our girls are free ranging in the garden right now which is surrounded by a small fence to keep the dogs out. Our big girls fly over it to get to the rest of the yard. I just opened our sliding glass door to throw a treat to our dogs who were on the patio off the second floor of the house. The big dog (Jasmine) sniffed the treat then the little dog (Basil) ran over to check it out, next thing I know our BA (Sky) is coming over and checking it out! She tried to take it but Basil ran off with it. She was sitting and chewing it and Sky came over and kept trying to take it from her! I had to call my husband and daughter over. It was hilarious to watch a chicken trying to take something from the dogs. Apparently we've trained the dogs not to mess with the chickens now. lol!
That's great that your dogs have learned not to hurt your chickens and that is one brave chicken too. I imagine that was a sight to see. You should video tape that! My chickens have also been enjoying cleaning up the garden, I've opened up a lot of the beds for them. They are upset with me though, I'm trying some fall planting and have been closing up some beds as well. They believe that the whole garden should be for them.

My Meyer babies are 5 months old today! Unfortunately, I hurt my neck this morning, so the pictures I got of them today are truly awful. I'm going to try to get better pictures of them once my neck is better, though.

Anyway, here they are!

I didn't get a picture of my smooth-feathered Cochin boy from Meyer's Black Frizzle Cochin bantams, but he's still here. My Meyer Easter-Egger bantam had to go because I didn't have enough pens, so my most recent picture of him is from Thursday, the day he went to his new home. Here is the EE bantam before he left for his new home:

I hope that your neck heals up soon. Those are good pics still, so sorry you had to give away your EE boy, he sure was pretty.

I wasn't sure if any of you wanted to see, but I took some pictures of the screw that Sunni ate last week.

I also tried taking some pictures of Sunni's goofy looking comb, but she wouldn't hold still and my camera wasn't cooperating. I'll try and get some pictures of the girls today and tomorrow for their 23 week picture update.

Ouch, I bet that was painful! I can't believe you took that out of her!

Oh and I almost forgot something! Sunni layed another big egg today. 2.5 ounces!

She has layed an egg 8 out of 9 days! Which is hard for me to believe since she is just starting out.

Gosh, sometimes I think I talk about Sunni too much.

She is doing so well, it sounds like she may heal up all the way. At least I hope so anyway.

My leghorn also started at 17 weeks. I'd go on an egg hunt if I were you. Let us know/

Very sorry about your neck. :hugs The pictures are still stunning. Your girls are beautiful. Are you sure they are only 5 months though? My girls will be 6 months old next week Sunday, and I thought yours were only a week younger.

They are a week younger than your girls, but we must be counting months differently. They are 5 months by the day. They were born on May 12, so today, October 12, is five months later. :)

Yup, I'd be looking everywhere!!

That's great!! Huge eggs :) Talk about Sunni all you want... you put some hard work into her to recovery!

Anyway, here they are!

Roha the Exchequer Leghorn:

Whiri the Light Brown Leghorn:

Very pretty girls!!

Lynn... any green eggs yet? I haven't gotten any from Izzy in a few weeks. I miss them; kinda dull egg carton without them.

YAY!!! Ellie lays green eggs!!!

She is 23 weeks old to the day. It's really hard to capture the correct color in the pictures. It's kind of a blue green.

Sadly, no. We have a dull egg carton too. I get around 3 brown eggs a day now from the 6 hens. I miss Olivia's green eggs too. I wonder if there is some time frame when they start back? Maybe they need the full 21 days that normal broodiness lasts?

Congrats! That is a beautiful egg. It looks light blue on my computer screen.

Well, I sent my husband out to crawl around and search for an egg, and he didn't have any luck, but there's a lot of brush so maybe we missed it. Would stink if we missed the first egg, but if it was indeed an egg, then there should be more to come!

Here's a photo of the girls hiding out in the evergreens. Not sure where the roo was when hubby snapped this photo :p They're hilarious. That's Jackie Kennedy up on the highest branch (I think she may be the laying culprit, if there is one).

I've opened up the garden to them except for 2 1/2 beds were I have some lettuce, carrots, wheat, and a few tomatoes, peppers, and squash still growing under cover. I sprinkled some wheat seed in the empty beds to see if I could get some cover to grow. I threw some in the "compost" bed for the girls but of course they had to go dig up the one bed I wanted it to actually grow in that I didn't cover up.

Our girls practiced their egg song a couple times before they actually laid. Maybe that was just their practice run. :)
