Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

LOL!!! No, it's a 4-4.5 hr drive each way!!! We are getting up before dawn & setting out on the road before the sun is up though! Tomorrow is the big day! We have a Collette, Belle, Esmerelda, Flora, Pippa or Beatrix, Penny or Poppy, and Doc McCluckins to pic up!

Have a safe drive!!!

Mine still do that to Peppy. I felt the same way with him. I thought he'd never be one of them until he didn't have a place to hide. You'll know right away if it's too soon. When I first took away his spot, the girls had him cornered with his head down. That told me it was too soon. It was about 11 or 12 weeks old that I took his hiding spot away without worrying about him. The girls still go after him for what seems like no reason at all. He just stays away from them most of the time.
Awww, poor Peppy. One day he'll grow into his big boy feathers and have his way with the girls!

NotableNancy- Nice board! Seeing the Speckled Sussex next to the Splash Blue Laced Red Wyandotte helped me to decide that I'll get SS's when I get a few Wyandottes.
Glad it helped!
I've seen pics of the BLRW and some look really light, almost white with red lacing like the pic I pinned and others are really blue with the red.... I guess it's just chance which kind you get? Because the 'blue' doesn't breed true? Do you know how it works??

You do have a great pinterest. I'm still trying to figure out how to use mine.
As far as when to remove the hiding spots. I removed their seperation area as soon as the biggest new chick would not fit. Worked well for me. I still kept the other few hiding areas and I also added more roosts in the run and coop since the little ones seemed to like to fly up away from the big ones. Except for the bully White Rock, there really was not too much trouble.

Your son must be so excited. I hope you have a fun and safe trip!

Not sure about Brownie but Coco sure seems like a cockerel. Is your son sad?

LOL... glad you got the buff orp!  It's going to be really hard to resist one on my next order. That's high on my want list.

Have you seen those silver laced cochins??? they are beauties!!

LOL... can never tell with EE's. 3 of my 4 laid under 20 weeks old and the other was a full 10 months old!!  I had a Big Red RIR too... had to rehome her. She was crazy in the head!!

Ummm I have not heard of them, but you can bet Im going to look them up in about 30 seconds! Lol.
I dont have a cochin at all yet. I wouldnt mind at least one, as long as its a LF.

Don't forget not all chickens squat so Jed could surprise you with an egg without ever squatting ;)     My Big Red was just a nut when it came to the nests... she chased any chicken out of the nest when they wanted to lay and pecked heads all the time. The poor girls used to seem so stressed when they had to lay their egg and now it's peaceful.

I love that it's on your dining room table... sounds so normal to us but if my friends came over they would think that was a bitt odd!!

Nothing like new chicks to get over giving some others away.   He will love having so many running around at one time!
I'm debating about switching out my 1 EE on order for Sept for a BO. If it was just a few weeks later and I knew if my 2 twelve week old EE's I have now will lay green/blue eggs I'd switch for sure. But my new chicks will most likely come before my current EE's lay.   And no, I can't add another especially if my Silkie turns out to be a girl!!!  LOL

I had my chicks in my living room for a month this winter! Lol. It was the warmest room in the house! I got a few looks from my mother in law though...she doesnt get it ;)

I think most of us go through very similar thinking. I had a spreadsheet of wanted breeds. I also have a pintrest board so I could keep track of the look of each bird and see them as a flock. lol
I am at the point now though that my want list is pretty short, down to 4-5 and 2 of those are mixes we'll breed for ourselves next year. I'm already over our stupid limit here (15 on 5 acres!!!!) but it's not like the county 1) has the resources to drive around and count chickens, 2) even knows I have chickens at all, and 3) who could count chickens that are running around in waist high weeds? I don't think my neighbors would know the limits, I'm sure they are like everyone else and assumes with this much land you can have whatever you want so I don't think I'll have to worry about complaints. The house right on the main road has a TON of chickens in a small run and obviously hasn't had any problems. I think it helps that we are 3 miles down a dirt road (that's the main road I'm talking about that his chickens face) and the only vehicles that come down here that aren't residents are delivery/service vehicles.

My current want list is:
Brabanter
Olive Egger
RIR (heritage)
and DD wants a silkie/EE mix
I'm also thinking about a couple turkens for a sustainable meat bird flock but that may not be necessary this first year if I'm breeding for the OE I'll have extra roos to raise for meat.

Im glad im not the only one who has a list! Lol.
Annnnd...I followed you both on pinterest..hope that's not creepy lol

LOL.... for some reason I thought as soon as you got the email you were hopping in the car!!!   I guess planning a little is a better idea. Especially with a little man along for the ride.

OK....

I may change my order... kind of a half way between spur of the moment and planning...      Well, I guess that's still planning but it's the best I can do.

Rather than the week of Sept 8th... they have almost everything I want the week of Aug 5th!!

1 Buff Orpington
1 Exchequer Leghorn
3 Golden Buff
1 Speckled Sussex and
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte

or I could get a White Leghorn instead of a SLW cause they have that too. I have always wanted those big white eggs but not the loud hen that goes along with it. So that's still a bit iffy.

A bit of a change because I won't get a rare Marans or a White Leghorn or an EE but instead will get a SS and SLW which are soooo pretty and the EL rather than the WL which is fine by me.  And a BO which really, I have wanted for a long time and seeing all of the pics of yours makes me want one even more!!

So it just changes everything by about a month which I think is doable.

I may have to call tomorrow  :lau

Everyone that has a SS... do they lay well or just kinda average.

Oh wow, a month earlier? That's great. Love your choices too. That is only a few weeks away. I'm excited for you, I hope that it works out.

:) Yep! In order to have all blue chicks you need to breed a black chicken with a splash chicken (doesn't matter which is the hen and which is the rooster) but the hatcheries for whatever reason are breeding blue to blue and with that you get 50% blue, 25% splash (the almost white ones you see but they can be more grey and 25% black. They could also breed blue and splash and get 50% each.

So now we are down to HOURS!!! On the agenda: cleaning the car out, packing some snacks, movies for the little man, cleaning brooder, and washing the feet of the nasty silkies!

THEN TO BED EARLY!!!

Can't wait! I will post pics and updates and I'm able tomorrow!!!!

A month earlier means the little ones will be that much bigger and better able to take a cold winter. Sounds like a good thing to me!!!

Let me see if I can finally post pics of my 2 month olds..First days in the coop then run...
.Edna the Black Australorp, Bobbie, the Dominique, Eleanor the EE
Eleanor
Bobbie
Eggnes the BR we think, Bobbie and Eleanor
Loving the run... they go inside at dusk every night on their own, but had a wicked thunderstorm for the first time and they huddled in the corner of the run instead of going inside.... poor Marty nearly had a heart attack checking on them in the lightening and then again in the wicked downpour... I was at work and he was a good chicken Daddy... Cannot believe they are only 2 months old... Sooooo huge! I will be a wreck when we have to go on vacation... Good thing my friends are lining up to take care of them while we are gone... They are spoiled... All Meyer Chicks...
