Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

@COChix
The hen you think is a buckeye is just a RIR, a buckeye has pea comb, heavy brows, and a thicker body type.

On a side note, I had gotten a Buckeye from Meyer last year and couldn't stand her crazy flightyness. I don't know if that's typical of the breed but it'll make me think twice before bringing another home.

That's great about Maxie. Sounds like she is doing better. Is Maxie tied up at night outside? We left one outside by accident and at dusk it went walking past the family room window heading for the low branches of the pine trees. So funny to watch her. We ran out and got her inside but she didn't seem too upset. Their instincts just kick in I guess.

Mine are coming in a week... Aug 5th or 6th hopefully!

3 Golden Buff
1 Buff Orpington
1 Speckled Sussex
1 Exchequer Leghorn (or 2 maybe... )
Maxie is completely free within our backyard now since we put up our fence. She used to be on a runner line leash, but not anymore. So she was free all night along with Ginger and nothing happened, so it's hopeful she might get along with them.

A week? So exciting!!!

That's nice you have family there.. odd that everyone decided to move there. But nice (if you like your family LOL) Too hot for me... I need to have a winter; yes, I'm the weird one.

I didn't think of that! Easier than putting her in a cage. I'll put it on my BR and BB. Just a few drops on the outside of the vent??
I like it in NC, we have pretty mild temps for summer and winter. We do have a few weeks of really hot and really cold but nothing like other parts of the world. I enjoy winter and the snow, but I do love my spring and summers for my gardening. I love the fall too! Ha, ha, I guess I don't have a favorite season, just love them all.

Yes, she's almost 17 months but I haven't had a good egg from her in at least a month... I'm thinking it's about 2 or 3. I know I found a soft egg from my BR but she has laid good eggs as well. It seems if I give extra calcium to my BR she lays a good egg. The BB nothing seems to help. And I see all my girls in the nest but not her. My camera is in the run and another facing the roosts, not the nests but I work from home and check all diff. times of day. She's never in there. I am going to attempt the dye on the vent trick and if that doesn't work, the cage idea.
I don't think she's molting yet. I had 1 molt, Moe my Cochin who is now broody, but no others yet.

On another note... I looked into the coop today and all the nest boxes were full... with my little girls!! Seems they were practicing being big girls laying eggs... it was so cute. I gotta get a pic.
She could very well be molting. Olivia our EE took almost 4 months from being broody to molting and that was before being a year old. Our BA looks like she is molting this past week and she is still laying some, but some of her eggs are soft shelled too. The BA is just under a year.

That's so cute that the little ones are practicing. Are they in the separate coop?

Update on my silkie situation - are they boys?

I know for sure (almost positive) that Coco is a boy - wattles getting bigger everyday, hearing what sounds like a dying frog occasionally...possibly the 1st attempts at crowing?

But now Coco & Brownie are doing the chest bump thing - would a boy & a girl do that?

Oh, and I've decided that I NEED a Tolbunt Polish Frizzle female...yeah, I know, expensive tastes!!!
I have all girls and they did a lot of chest bumping too, so not just a sign of being a boy.

my Meyer Barred Rock rooster!
Wow, he is a beautiful boy!

Is anyone at Meyer Hatchery on Sunday to order?? Exchequer Leghorns are 'very limited avail' and I don't know if I can get my order in today or I have to wait till tomorrow. Do you note a bit of desperation in my voice? I guess I can go with a SLW if they sell out but I really want an EL and am afraid the one I ordered could be a male or it could not make it in transit.
Now those SLW are gorgeous birds too, just saying!!

Thanks on the tomatoe, there is nothing like a fresh garden tomatoe! I think yours looks yummy and you have zucchini that is one thing we didn't plant, but we have cucumbers and squash coming out of our ears!
- Wow on Maxie, maybe she can be a flock dog in the future. We have four dogs, we have a young Sheppard male that we hope to train to guard the chickens. Right now he is a young punk that doesn't listen very good. He is about 9 month so we have some work to do. We also have an 8 year old Anatolian and he seems to be very good near the chickens. He will just lay in the yard next to the chicken area while I am out doing chicken chores.
what perennials do you have? I love gardening regardless if it is veggies, perennials or herbs. We use a lot of herbs for us and our animals.
Nice choices, our Buff roo's are starting to turn that goldeny color that they get, so pretty!
great idea!
Wow!
So true about a fresh garden tomato. I don't have big tomatoes yet, but those little bite sized ones have more flavor in that one bite then those store bought ones. I still do not have zucchini yet, I have the plants and they are trying but I had to perform surgery on them to remove the squash vine borer worm from their stems. They are trying to produce. That's a cucumber in the picture, one that got a little too big from all of our rain,

That's great to have a dog that won't bother the chickens. I have hopes for Maxie but only under supervision.

So here are some pics from today. This was after their breakfast, I also some better shots of all our roo's today. The first four shots are of our run.

Honey
Such beautiful hens and I love that set up. You have so many roosting places. I am going to steal some of those ideas for our run so everyone can roost. I don't know why I didn't think of it before.

Eggs are good! To me, aside from the eggs, which I am getting more of each day, I love my chickens because tending to them and watching them brings me peace. There is something very serene about my simple routine that helps me relax and forget about the stresses of work, the horrible stories on the news and the crazy hustle and bustle of the world we live in. So, yeah, breed standards are not a priority of mine. If someone is going to look down on me because I have hatchery birds, so be it.
It is so relaxing to have chickens. My garden was my get away before, not it is my chickens too. I have to watch how long I stay outside between gardening and the chickens or housework gets behind and my husband feels left out. Of course, when I am inside I have to watch my time online too looking at gardening and chicken sites including BYC of course.

Lol! You're right. The dogs do enough damage. My flock has about 600 square feet of fully enclosed run, they can't have my gardens, too!
I would love to see pics of your setup. That is a huge run! What is it 20 feet by 30 feet or something. I wish we had a run that big, you must have a lot of land.

Our chickens really tear up our beds and scatter the wood shavings everywhere. I have my garden fenced in so they can't get in there, but they have really done some damage to my husbands grassy areas, so their in the coop and run today until we figure out a solution.

lol

@mama - beautiful
.
Anybody on here have bee's? We just bartered to have hives on property if course we will get some honey out of the deal. They are helping pollinate all of our gardens. I took a couple shots today of them and of our tomato beds.

The gang discovered the dirt, sand bath area that I have been working on developing. They were cute, clucking and stretching out I the sun.
Nice looking garden. I get just as excited over garden pictures as I do chicken pictures. They do go hand in hand. You have bees too? So jealous!! Looks like the garden and the chickens are doing very well.

@Rooster - ok thanks, yeah still just trying to learn all I can as fast as I can. Hit the ground running with 28!
Many of us, well me, were pretty clueless too until we "hit the ground running" like you say. Hey, it is always good to learn from the experience anyway,

keep us posted on Maxie's progress with the flock. Lol on the cucumber, I thought it was a zuc as it is so big! I am gonna fry up some stuffed squash blossoms today! YUM!

I too wanna see the run from Mama. The girls love their roosts, with 28 total we tried to allow for all,of them to have space even when all together. They all roost on the top roosting area in their coop as well. Will have to take some pics of that. I have been observing and adjusting as we go. About all you can do is trial and error.
