Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Hello guys...

My USPS status says that my order left the transport station close to me at 7:53am, and said guaranteed delivery by 3pm. I have never had that happen with my orders before, I've always got a call first thing in the morning to come and get the chickys.  So it leaves me wondering if they are going to sit on some truck somewhere until they make it to my post office in the morning, or they will be getting to the post office this afternoon sometime.  I think I am going to go down there and find out what they know.  Who needs them sitting on a truck overnight. .and won't that get hot!

Also I have a question for those of you with Exchequer Leghorns, do any of you have them in cold weather climates?  I know they are a Mediterranean breed, and was wondering if they could survive winters in mid New York State area.  I am 90 miles north of NYC... so not like Buffalo, but still cold nonetheless.  Also, how are their personalities? Wondering if they are super skittish.

Tick, tock, Tick, tock. Tick tockkkkkkkkkk

Come on little box... arrive at my house!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Ex leghorns from meyer are the friendliest out of all my flock. They don't act like leghorns at all! I am a bit worried that they don't have all the screws right in the head! I don't know about the cold as I am in SC, mine have not started laying yet. My only consern with them is that they don't seem to have the instinctive fears that would keep them safe from preditors. The naighbors dog can be barking at them thrue the fence and they will walk right up to him.

How many and who do you have laying now?  Are you able to tell?  What are you planning for next spring?

How are yours doing? How many are laying now? I can't remember, but are both your EE's laying now? Sounds like you're doing great to have just started out this year.

Both EEs are now laying as well as 3 out of 4 golden buffs. One's a slacker! I also have a dominique, australorp and buff Orpington and a mystery hen just starting out. The most I have gotten is 9 yesterday - 4 of which were peewees. So, I'm definitely getting there! I'm bringing eggs to my sons who have been working out on Martha's Vineyard for the summer

Pretty eggs. That's a good amount! I have 21 hens and I was getting an average of 17 a day when the young ones first started. (16 young ones) Now I average 13 a day. I bet you'll have a lot soon, then they'll settle down and give you a little over a dozen a day. If they're anything like mine. I do have 2 broodies now and a polish chick, so no eggs from the broodies and Buffy lays maybe 3 to 4 a week.

Have you any of you seen the Back to Eden film? It is free online http://www.backtoedenfilm.com/

The guy has gardens and chickens and uses wood mulch a lot. I have been using wood mulch in the chicken run now and under bushes and in the gardens, really works great to build up the soil, etc. The guy in the film is a little odd to say the least, but he is doing great things with gardening and with his chickens.

I am starting to compost in the chicken run and we plan on adding more wood chips and any yard and garden waste to the run too. We've had mulch down for awhile around our rose bushes and I dug up some for the chickens and it was loaded with huge worms and crickets. Wood mulch is amazing. Plus it helps keep their run less muddy. Kind of a science experiment happening in my yard this year to see what works and what doesn't. Plus with the chickens locked in their run I wanted to provide them with more stuff to dig through and eat.

Thought those of you that garden especially would like to see that film, but he does talk a little about his chickens too.

Meyer Salmon Favorelle hatched May 27. Crows every morning for me now. Was supposed to be a pullet... Oh well.

I have 4 total and 2 of the pullets are darker than usual. They say that's normal coming from a hatchery.

Oh I misread, I thought you meant a Barnevelder, my bad.

Here is a link to a disturbing article on how commercial birds are forced into starvation and molting all in the name of money. So sad

Oh my, I had never read about that before. I just assumed they got rid of the layers when they hit the molt. This is so much worse

Woohoo! Congrats to everyone who got little fluffy butts delivered today! So glad they arrived early! I'm quite jealous, though I don't really want chicks until the spring. Right now I want a couple started pullets... Husband still says no :/
