I believe you have made the right decision but I know it's still hard.
Thank you :hugs

I'm so sorry too!!!! I started to reply to your post earlier, but didn't know what to say other than "sorry" - it's amazing how attached we get to those little chickens, and how heartbreaking it is to have them in pain. Hugs.

We are going to have to put Sunni down tonight. She is in a lot of pain, and we found a large bump just below her waddles that we are almost positive is the thing she got stuck, and it didn't go down like we thought. She is having trouble breathing, and now she is having a hard time swallowing water. The only way we could possibly get whatever it is out is with surgery, and that just isn't something we can afford. She is clearly suffering, and I think the best thing to do is just put her down.

Right now I'm sitting on our screened in porch with Sunni laying on my chest, and I can't stop crying.

Awww, I'm so sorry. If she is in that much pain and can't even drink that that would be the humane thing to do. I'm sure it is a difficult decision.
thinking of you and Sunni.

Nancy: Any more eggs today? Ash broke her streak and didn't lay one today, but the past 4 days she has. She did finally go in the nest box, so I hope she actually lays an egg in it tomorrow. I keep having to go on an egg hunt each day.
Nope, nothing today. But my Cochin, Moe aka Mosey, is so funny. If I just walk near her she gets startled and squats! She is a serious squatter. She lifter her butt so far in the air I saw way more than I wanted to

Sheesh, I thought an egg was going to pop out right there! But it doesn't seem like her comb and wattles are near full grown. They're too funny.
Amazing that they just figure out how to go in the nest box considering they didn't have a hen to teach them.
4 days in a row; not bad!
We cracked the egg last night and it had 2 little blood spots in it. Guess cause she's new to laying? It grossed my kids out

We officially had no eggs today too. I put them up an hour ago and walked around the garden just in case. When I had all the others I was finding them all over the place at various times of day. Yeah Big Mama started yesterday and has been doing some serious squatting too, but she gets real low to the ground. That is funny about Moe.

I'm sorry, you are doing the right thing tho. At least she has a great momma who cares enough about her to do the right thing and making her as comfortable as she can. Again I'm really sorry about Sunni and we are here for you..

Thank you everyone. :hugs We are going to wait and see how she is in the morning. She has a lot of energy right now. She was preening and even jumping up on things, when all day she could hardly walk. I guess tonight I'll hope for the best, and maybe she'll pull through. I sure wish I knew what happened and what she swallowed. Or if she even swallowed anything. It's so hard to know what's wrong just by looking at her...

I also have a question. Is it normal for a chickens tongue to go way back in the throat when you open their mouth? Because that is what Sunni has been doing. Her tongue is really far back, and we aren't sure if it's just because we have her mouth open.

Maybe she is improving? If she does seem to be, you're doing the right thing to give her another day. I did that with the two of mine and I am so glad I did. Sometimes when they're ill you just have to decide whether they are improving or declining in health day by day, if each day has small improvements that's good. It's been 3 weeks since we had the dog attack and just today my BO, Big Mama looks like she is back to normal and Oreo the BR still is in recovery and it really has been a slow recovery with her.

Whatever you decide is the right choice for you. Hang in there.

Like others have said, we're here for you.

I'm not sure about the tongue.

I'm so sorry for your loss. One of the hardest things in the world to do is to decide to let a beloved pet who is suffering be put down. I have been through it with loved pets before too. But sometimes, it is the best that we can do for them. I've had pets die in my arms and cursed the fact that I didn't end their suffering sooner. Trust me, you have made the right decision, even if it doesn't feel like it right now.

Be strong and take heart that you have other chickies who need you.
