Sorry for your loss. It's always sad to lose a chick. It looks like she/he was a little Barred Rock, I think. Poor thing.

Chickenmamma- I'm sorry about Sunni, how long ago did she try to eat the wasp? I hope she gets better really soon cause I'm sure feeding her 3 times a day is hard on both of you

We don't think it was a wasp anymore. We think she has wet fowl-pox. We noticed that something was wrong with her about 23 days ago. She seems back to her normal self, she just can't drink on her own and won't eat anything on her own except bread, cracked corn, and dirt.

I've been researching tube feeding all morning, and I wanted your opinions on it. It seems like a safe method of feeding, but I worry that tube feeding her will cause her to lose the ability of swallowing food and fluids on her own. I've gone through so many threads and haven't found the answer to weither or not it's a safe thing to do. About 30% of people were saying "DON'T DO IT!" And the other 70% were saying that it should be fine if done right.

I watched a few videos on tube feeding and it seems like a very fast and easy way of feeding a chicken who cant eat on its own. I just don't know if it's safe. :/

I'm sorry for your loss. We've been there too many times this year.

Amber seems to be doing better. She spent all day outside with the rest of the flock today. This morning she ate a few bites of watermelon. I don't know if she's eating anything else out there or even drinking. I need to just go hangout out there. When we came home this afternoon she was sunbathing! Then my daughter picked her up and put her on my hand. She couldn't balance and fell off! Poor thing can't fly at all so she dropped like a rock. I felt so bad. I think it hurt her because now she's just standing around. Her skin looks like it's growing back well. My daughter has been spraying her with the skin growing stuff (can't think of the name right now). It seems to be helping.

Lynn: That definitely looks like a Campine! I'm glad that you still have her. One of my Campines was very energetic when she was young as well, and she never grew out of it. My other Campine is more laid back, but she still doesn't like people and she's still flighty.

Sunni is back to eating only from a syringe again. She was doing really well with eating on her own, and then she just stopped. We think it may be because she was getting sick of scrambled eggs, but it's hard to tell. She still tries to eat the dry crumbles that are always out for the other girls, but she can't ever swallow more than a few pieces. She still isn't drinking on her own either. I don't know what we are going to do if she doesn't ever eat on her own. She hates being syringe fed, and she squirms and sends good flying everywhere. I can't imagine having to syringe feed her 3 times a day for the rest of her life.
So sorry to hear about Sunni. I have never done the tube feeding so I cannot advise. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

So sorry about the little chick.

We've had a busy weekend so far here. I am hoping to get some help with taking pictures of the chicks. They are so much fun to watch. My welsummer chicks is so tiny, I am beginning to think she is a bantam. Do you think they could mix up bantams and regular sized ones? I know that they do have bantam Welsummers. She is the cutest thing though, I had one in my April order but she was the same size as the other chicks, this one is not near as big, she does have some big wing feathers though.

Chickenmamma- I'm no help on tube feeding, sorry! The only experience I have with "forced feeding" is with reptiles and that is totally different. The only time I tried tube feeding with a bird I didn't get far cause I was young and I wasn't feeling really confident about it and that was 10+ years ago so I don't really remember much.

Lynn, I could only imagine the dust your gonna have with 16(?) chicks! I have 4 and 2 birds and I go thru the giant box of dusters every week and a half! I also have a question for you, last week when they called you to tell you some of your chicks didn't hatch about what time did they call? I sleep with my phone on silent and on mon I usually don't get up till 9 or so but was wondering if I should get up earlier or turn my phone up in case they try to get ahold of me.

Trsturself- I'm glad amber seems to be doing better, minus the nasty fall of course!
