Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

This year in march I ordered buckeye chicks from Meyers Hatchery, Just wanting utility chicks for eggs and meat. As they grew I thought that they looked good so In my advertising campaign I was going to put them in the NEA DISTRICT here in Arkansas, Did not like the idea of leaving them for a week but I took 2 cockerels and 3 pullets up there just for advertising, had to inter them as large breed open class so I was competing against every large breed there which was about 650 chickens I was in the rabbit barn and the secretary came to me and told me that I had won GRAND CHAMPION, I was excited for that Being my first time showing, she told me that he was still looking for best of show. A few minutes later she came to me and told me that He had place my buckeyes as BEST OF SHOW SO just like a little kid I was jumping up and down with excitement. So a first time show with first time raising buckeye chickens I was very blessed to achieve what I did. And my advertising campaign worked, with orders of chicks and hatching eggs for Buckeye. I am selling as Utility Buckeye chickens because there is a lot more work that needs to be done before I can compete with the true Buckeye

That is a pretty egg! Love those first eggs! Especially after waiting so long and watching those little chicks grow up. I am still amazed at the process.

Well I took down the scary blankets the next day and I have some vinyl covering the huge windows in the coop. I have a open air coop. The clear vinyl lets the light in too, so that it is not so scary. I left the door alone so there is plenty of air flow there, where the walls meet the roof there is airflow and I made sure to loosely cover the windows too. So I am hoping there is a good balance of direct air verses ventilation. I fixed the vinyl so it can be opened during the day too. Plus, we are climbing back up to the 60's or 70's in the next few days. Weird weather here in NC. Thanks for all the advice, hopefully I did it right. I used a huddle box when the chickens were little and it worked out well until they were too big for it.

That sounds like you have it worked out. I worry about the cold as well but I'm sure they'll be fine. I would assume it's instinct to huddle together on the roost if they're really cold and I don't see them doing that yet on my camera so I think they're fine. From what I've read the heat is worse than the cold and with an open air coop you've got that covered!

The first egg is always exciting.


Our cochin is either already laying or about to. She is more than 2 fingers and her vent looks like she's laying but if she is I have no idea when she started or which egg is hers. We got 2 large eggs today, one of which didn't look familiar, but I saw our BR in the nest today and didn't see her egg so I figured it was hers. Next coop we build I'm definitely getting the nest cam! But I want one that will take a pic every 5 min so I can review the day!

My cochin's egg is pretty round; practically like a golf ball so I always know when she lays but there's about 5 eggs that I don't know whose is whose. I have a coop cam but it's pointed the other direction so I can count them at night on the roost and make sure they're all inside without having to go out there. I would love to have one pointed at the nests for a couple days. No still pics on mine though, just live feed.

I went out this morning and no egg yet. A couple of the nest boxes looked like there had been a chicken making a nest in it. I come home from work low and behold! My first egg from one of my buffs! Sorry had to show everyone what my buffs did! My very first egg! They are 24 weeks old yesterday. I got them as day old chicks from Meyer

Guess your neighbor is getting some EE's? I guess eventually they'll learn. I do love the EE's though. I would have been tempted as well. It is easier to say no to chicks now since Winter is coming.
Maybe there is still hope for your EE and that was someone else's egg? I thought Daisy had started but I think each time it was Ash's egg. I watched Daisy and her egg is smaller and more pointed then I thought. So what I thought was her egg was Ash's at first and she really just started squatting last week, but made noise and went to the nest boxes a week or two before she actually started laying. I hope you still have a chance for your EE. I hope my two new ones will lay blue/green eggs too! Still nothing from Olivia, so all brown eggs each day. We have family in visiting too and it is always fun to show off the green egg. Oh well...

I understand about that RIR, I still have to watch Pepper too, she makes little holes in my legs if I don't watch my back. We have friends who may start keeping chickens and I am really considering giving Pepper to them. I'd like to give away a couple more too, but no one else is mean yet or annoys me enough to get rid of. Pepper is not as mean to the others as your RIR is though.

It's official. We are moving Sunni into the house this week. I just ordered two diapers from lovemychix (here on BYC) for her. She doesn't fit into the flock any more, and she's miserable if I put her into the coop. She has been spending a lot of time in the front of my barn away from the other chickens. She loves to be around me when I'm outside, so I think coming to live in the house will be good for her. And I won't have to worry about the chickens picking even more spikes off of her comb.

Now I just need to clean out the old dog igloo in the loft of my barn and get it set up in the house for her.

I hope you post pics of her in your house! Where does she lay her egg? In the igloo or does she go outside when she wants and just sleeps in the house?

I hope you post pics of her in your house! Where does she lay her egg? In the igloo or does she go outside when she wants and just sleeps in the house?

I have pictures of her little house. I got it all put together yesterday with some help from my dad. It is made mostly out of things we had laying around. The only thing we purchased was the burlap sack and the clamps over the door. We just needed something simple to cover the door to keep her in at night and to keep our cats out. She will be sleeping in the igloo at night and lay her eggs in it. She will get to go outside whenever I do to take dust baths and get some fresh air. She already doesn't spend hardly any time with the other chickens, she mostly follows me around all day anyways, so I think she'll like being in the house. She thinks of me as her flock, so she's very bonded with me.

Here's what we came up with for her house in the house.

We just needed something simple that would keep her in and the cats out for sleeping, laying eggs, and those very few times that nobody will be home to watch her. We only ended up spending $12 on this yesterday because we already had just about everything for it.

A hole we cut in the back for ventilation and to add more light to the inside. We drilled holes in the plastic and zip tied chicken wire over the hole,


The doorway. We found a bin of burlap sacks at TSC that they were selling for $1.19 each and the clamps we found by the check out at TSC. They came in a bundle of 28, so I have plenty of extras.

This is the inside. I still have to put down some newspapers and then some shavings in the nest box. But I'll wait to do that until she moves into the house. We used a leftover piece of 2x4 for the roosts that we had from when we put roosts up in the coop, and then down at the left is the nest box. We used a 3 gallon bucket with a flat side for the nest box. We put the flat side down so she can easily lay down in it.

It's a very simple but very sturdy structure. I think it'll be perfect for her. I'm looking forward to moving her into it. Now all I have to do is wait for the diapers to get here.

That's interesting that your cochin lays a really round egg. We got a small really round one the other day. Our partridge rock also lays an egg that has rounded ends so it's hard to tell.
Anyone else have cochin eggs?

Yay! Got my first egg from my June girls. It is 45 grams (so medium size) and was laid by one of my Golden Buffs. What really surprised me was that it was in the nest box! What a smart girl
