Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I have some horrible news, my dog which has been doing a good job of guarding the flock has gone rogue and killed half of the flock.

I have 3 that are injured and patched them up as good as I could and 3 that are ok, traumatized but ok. I couldn't believe it when I came home from work yesterday. She will be going to a new home hopefully this weekend. I could not find 2 of them, there was no trace at all. I was so upset that I have been crying ever since it happened.

I am so happy right now!!
I'm soooo happy for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. Yes they were shook up a bit the girls didn't leave my side the whole time I was out there with them. When I would go inside really quick they would run into the coop, but when I would come back out they would run to me. I wish I could stay home with them to keep a closer eye on them. Unfortunately got to work to keep the girls happy! Thanks again everyone! This is why I love byc everyone is so caring and loving :hugs

Okay, here is my winterized metal waterer.
700
700

Its a 5 gallon galvanized metal waterer with an 8-10ft (can't remember exactly) electric heat tape wrapped around the outer shell/jacket of the waterer. The electric heat tape I believe can be bought at Lowes or a manufactured home supply store. It looks like a metal woven cord that has an electric plug at one end. Start at the bottom of the jacket, just above where the waterline will be, and wind the heat tape around on a gradual incline so there is about an inch gap in between each tape coil like a spring. I used duct tape to hold the coils in place and then wrapped the jacket (above the waterline) with 2 rolls of vet wrap. Its going to insulate the waterer without being too bulky. Then wrap everything tightly again with duct tape, so everything is waterproof AND easy to wipe down.
I spent a little extra money and got a thermostat control instead of just a plug, that way the water inside won't get too hot , it just shuts off at 40*f. The best part about this setup is that its lasted 4 winters already, my girls have warm water to drink even in below zero temps, and its REALLY safe to use. I have to thank my Father in Law for this, as I'm lacking the brain power to come with this all on my own ;)

Yea, my started Leghorn I got from Meyers in September started laying 3 days ago. My original Leghorn still hasn't starred back up and my EE hasn't layed for over a month. My RIR is still laying along with my 3 RedSexLinks I got from someone local. We'll see how the rest of winter goes.

Just came inside and the 2 that went missing last night were home when I got home from work! I was so excited that they were ok they didn't have anything wrong with them. The 2 with the bad wounds are doing pretty good considering everything that happened to them. And I also got 5 eggs today! Couldn't believe after their traumatic experience that they even laid any eggs at all. I'm one happy person though!

That is great that they showed up, so happy for you! I hope your two hurt ones have a speedy recovery. That's awesome to get eggs too!

I can imagine your extra worried about them now. I still love in fear for something to happen to mine too. Once they've been attacked once, it is a hard thing to forget. I wish I could free range them more, but I worry too much about stray dogs. If I could afford a full fenced in yard that would help our situation.

Okay, here is my winterized metal waterer.
Wow, your father in law is a very handy guy. I'll have to save this idea for the future. Especially once I go through the winter changing out the waterer, I'll probably be searching for this idea again.

My 2014 Meyer catalog came yesterday! Did anyone else receive their catalog yet?
Oh, not yet.....so excited!!!!

Can't order anymore, but a girl can dream, right?
