Yup, thats my NB!! Oh my goodness burnt her crest, she must have loved the warmth on her!!


LOL thanks... Yup, that's the famous Nancy Brahma. She's supposed to be a Buff Brahma but seems to be a mix of light brahma and buff. Stella is very sweet and lays a pretty spotted egg, pic below. We decided Meyer should develop this breed and have already named it the Nancy Brahma

A Buff Brahma was the #1 breed I wanted so I ordered 2 of them from Meyer. One ended up being a rooster with a cross beak (I can't have a rooster) and the other, Stella,
is a mix but she's a sweetie pie.

You can always vent with us! I was going to clip my girls wings to be on the safe side but decided against it only because if their wings ARE clipped they wouldn't be able to get away from predators as well. That's my opinion but mine free range so it's hard for me to say anything about chickens that are in runs. I guess it wouldn't be bad for them to get clipped if they don't free range. If that was my neighbor I would be calling the dog warden on him till they do something about it. I love my dogs but if they were in someone else's yard and possibly could hurt someone else's pets I would keep them on a leash. Some people have no respect for others animals. Others have said to me before "well they are just chickens". Just chickens! I don't think so! And then I precede to tell them no more eggs and they change their tune! Lol

Thank you! Yeah I didn't want to clip their wings either. The ones that survived the dog attack earlier in the year needed them to fly away. I do let mine free range, that is when they've been flying over the garden fence. They have a large covered coop and run and I also free range them almost everyday in the garden. They do not have access to the whole yard yet, but a large area. Yes, my chickens are not just chickens, but yeah others do think that way, don't they? I keep calling the dog pound here, but they take so long to come out that the dog has run back home before they get here. They're pretty slack, the dog is a pit bull too. Guess he has to bite somebody or kill something before they do something. It's crazy!

Our girls all fly over our garden fence all the time. I don't mind anymore because at least they get to forage in the yard but have a safety spot away from the dogs if they start getting a little too playful. I have found our GLP on the roof of the coop a couple times lately. And we have bird netting up! She finds the smallest holes in the netting to fly through. I worry that she'll fly over the neighbor's fence right there and I'm positive the dogs would kill her in an instant. I might have to clip her wings. I would worry about your neighbor's dog too! I can't believe he still lets it run loose!

The incubator is still getting made. The thermostat should arrive from meyer tomorrow. Then I just have to finish the window in the lid (I broke the glass trying to install it the first time). We plan to try our first hatch late Jan. I'll keep you all posted!

What a pretty boy!

Amber finally laid her first egg yesterday at 30 weeks and 6 days. It's a dark brown color with a few grayish brown speckles. I found it in the nest box last night when I closed the girls up for the night. I know it was definitely hers because Lilly and Daffodil already laid theirs in the morning, and my other brown egg layer is molting. I'm sad that it's not green, but it is still a really pretty egg.

So out of two EE's, one lays bluish green eggs and the other lays dark brown.

Yay Amber! Those EE's are so unpredictable!

It got up to 18 today. It felt great. I still have the chickens locked up in their 10x4 enclosure. I think they are sick of being cooped up. It is supposed to warm up now so if it's sunny tomorrow I'll open up their enclosure so they can get out and stretch their legs a little more. Did I tell you guys Boomerang (SLP) burnt her crest? I am on the CO thread and I can't remember what I say here and what I say there. lol Anyway... I went to check on them in the other day and her crest looked strange. I looked closer and she had burnt her crest on both sides. I thought maybe the older girls had crowded her into the work light but I was watching them later and she stuck her head right between the guard and the light. Stupid chicken! Guess we won't be showing her at the stock show next month! Charlie (SLP) had icicles on the front of her crest. Poor thing looked miserable.The other two polish haven't had any problems.

If I'm not mistaken that is what someone has coined the Nancy Brahma.

A burnt crest? Ouch, poor thing. I hope she heals okay. You have some tough chickens with the cold, icicles and burnt crest.

I survived the wedding and the reception, my little boy is now married to his high school sweetheart. The reception at our house turned out really nice and we all had a great time. It was a wonderful time, but I am glad to go back to normal life again.

My poor chickens had to be locked in there coop and run most of Friday and all of Saturday since we were so busy. They got to free range a lot on Sunday, then today it rained all day. I think the weather will be nice tomorrow, so they can be out again. I'm only getting 2 to 3 eggs a day, my BR Pepper is now molting too and the new layer whoever it was has not laid another egg yet. It's weird having all these giant chickens, 22 of them and still only get 2 to 3 eggs a day. Of course, I guess the young ones need more time. I think they are 19 weeks today.

Poor Pepper looks so pitiful with her lack of neck feathers. She looks thinner without all those feathers too. She is eating well though and is a good weight. I feel sorry for her with it being so cold at night, but we don't usually go below freezing here so I guess she'll be okay.

If a light Brahma had hopped the fence, your Brahma would have been a light Brahma because silver X gold (the genetic components behind light and buff Brahmas) is sexlinked. No matter how I ran it (buff, buff columbian, etc.), it turned out the same.

Now, I have also been reading recently about chimerism and mosaicism in different species as this is a genetic anomaly that I'm interested in, and looking at your bird as compared to the mosaics I have seen makes me wonder if that is what she is. A mosaic is genetically two individuals combined into one, which sometimes shows up like patchiness of two different colors. I don't know a whole lot about the genetics here, but my first thought after reading about that was your Brahma. Maybe she's a mosaic chicken? I'm not going to say 100% that she is, but it is kind of interesting to think about.

I have put my order in for next year; however, I noticed one of them is no longer showing available for the week I ordered. Would this mean enough orders we're put in for what they think they can hatch or does it mean they'll be calling me for a sub? Possibly I'm overly paranoid because of the sub last year.

Greta and Buffy - Buffy's hairdo was a little wet. It's been raining the past few days.


Izzie - I expect a white egg any day with that comb and those wattles


Lacie - She's getting pretty red now too and lots of growth. She may have laid the egg last week instead of Rocky


Ellie - I don't expect an egg from her for a long time, just hope it's blue/green when she does lay.


Dottie- Lots of growth but no red yet.


This is what was supposed to be my Welsummer, but she has decided she's a leghorn I think. She sure looks like one!


Ginger does not seem close at all. Greta is beside her. I won't hold my breath for either of my EE's to lay soon.


Rocky - She acts like a layer except for squatting but her comb is not as red as Lacie the GLW.


Splash - Nice shot of her comb, but not much red or wattle growth.


My BA, Blackie is getting huge in size and lots of red and wattle/comb growth. She wouldn't hold still for a picture. Looks like my BO, Big Mama has stopped for the winter too. She will not squat anymore and I have not gotten an egg from her in a few days.

I finally got around to taking some pictures. Sorry for the delay.

Some of these the quality didn't turn out so good. They are 31 weeks old now, so 7 months. All of them are laying eggs now, finally! Hopefully next month I will be able to go out to our friends house and take some pictures of the Campines. From what I've heard, they really like it at their new home.

and Miss Sunni. - (Buff Orpington) She LOVES living in the house. She is little miss Queen Bee of the household. She is the boss of all three cats and our dog. They all know not to mess with her, especially when it comes to treats. The other day my mom tossed a table scrap to the dog and Sunni saw him get it, and she ran up and grabbed onto his whiskers and chased him through the house trying to get the treat.

And every night she stands under the table next to our dog and begs for table scraps with him. She is such a little character.

Well it's warming up here finally. At 8am it was already 20. That's past our high for most days. I think it's supposed to get all the way into the 40's today. I left the enclosure door open for the girls yesterday but they didn't venture further than a foot or two. The rabbit took off out that door this morning like a bat out of hell though. I think she's definitely ready to get around. Sure makes you feel sorry for the animals that live in cages! These girls have had 40 square feet plus their 16sq ft coop to walk around in which is more than 4sq ft per bird and my friends poor birds live in horse troughs, never seeing the outside. Poor birds! As soon as the snow melts I'm going to repair my tractor and stick them outside in it just so they can see what it's like to scratch around and feel the wind on them.

Boomerang wasn't hurt by burning her crest, it was all feathers. She just looks funny now. If I get home before dark I'll try to take a pic of her.

Chicken genetics is very interesting. I think of it as a lot simpler and am always surprised when people start talking about what you'll actually get when you cross different colors/breeds.

You should breed your NB and see what hatches!

How interesting. So possibly 2 eggs fused together to form my NB? I was a bio major in college but forget everything about genetics so I'm no help. I read about the "geep" mix of goat and sheep and that is so cool. It would be interesting to breed her but no rooster here so that won't happen.
