Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Pip: I want a mosaic chicken. That is so neat if that is how it happened. Very interesting.

Here's a few pics of my girls from this morning:

Greta and Buffy - Buffy's hairdo was a little wet. It's been raining the past few days.

Izzie - I expect a white egg any day with that comb and those wattles

Lacie - She's getting pretty red now too and lots of growth. She may have laid the egg last week instead of Rocky

Ellie - I don't expect an egg from her for a long time, just hope it's blue/green when she does lay.

Dottie- Lots of growth but no red yet.

This is what was supposed to be my Welsummer, but she has decided she's a leghorn I think. She sure looks like one!

Ginger does not seem close at all. Greta is beside her. I won't hold my breath for either of my EE's to lay soon.

Rocky - She acts like a layer except for squatting but her comb is not as red as Lacie the GLW.

Splash - Nice shot of her comb, but not much red or wattle growth.

My BA, Blackie is getting huge in size and lots of red and wattle/comb growth. She wouldn't hold still for a picture. Looks like my BO, Big Mama has stopped for the winter too. She will not squat anymore and I have not gotten an egg from her in a few days.
They're so great looking! Izzie looks so close to laying and Lacie is so pretty! It would be nice to get a few more eggs soon huh.
Glad the wedding/reception went well and now back to normal :)

I finally got around to taking some pictures. Sorry for the delay.

Some of these the quality didn't turn out so good. They are 31 weeks old now, so 7 months. All of them are laying eggs now, finally! Hopefully next month I will be able to go out to our friends house and take some pictures of the Campines. From what I've heard, they really like it at their new home.

Amber - (Easter Egger)

Annie - (White Leghorn)

Daffodil - (Buff Orpington)

Ellie - (Easter Egger) She wouldn't hold still, so this was the only good picture I got of her.

Lilly - (Black Australorp)

Alice - (White Leghorn) I find it funny that last time I took pictures she was in the same nest box in almost the exact same position.
lol.png

and Miss Sunni. - (Buff Orpington) She LOVES living in the house. She is little miss Queen Bee of the household. She is the boss of all three cats and our dog. They all know not to mess with her, especially when it comes to treats. The other day my mom tossed a table scrap to the dog and Sunni saw him get it, and she ran up and grabbed onto his whiskers and chased him through the house trying to get the treat.

And every night she stands under the table next to our dog and begs for table scraps with him. She is such a little character.

taking a dust bath on the dog bed and telling our cat Nala off for coming too close to her.

and showing off the big bow that I clipped to her diaper.
Arghhh... my computer keeps doing something funky and 'timing out' so I can only post one reply at a time... sorry.

Your pics really make me want a WL, they are so pretty and I'm still kicking myself I didn't get any the first time around. Next time!
Love the pics of Sunni. She looks so happy!!

Well it's warming up here finally. At 8am it was already 20. That's past our high for most days. I think it's supposed to get all the way into the 40's today. I left the enclosure door open for the girls yesterday but they didn't venture further than a foot or two. The rabbit took off out that door this morning like a bat out of hell though. I think she's definitely ready to get around. Sure makes you feel sorry for the animals that live in cages! These girls have had 40 square feet plus their 16sq ft coop to walk around in which is more than 4sq ft per bird and my friends poor birds live in horse troughs, never seeing the outside. Poor birds! As soon as the snow melts I'm going to repair my tractor and stick them outside in it just so they can see what it's like to scratch around and feel the wind on them.

Boomerang wasn't hurt by burning her crest, it was all feathers. She just looks funny now. If I get home before dark I'll try to take a pic of her.

Chicken genetics is very interesting. I think of it as a lot simpler and am always surprised when people start talking about what you'll actually get when you cross different colors/breeds.

You should breed your NB and see what hatches!
We were in the 40's here today too and I am glad the nights have been above freezing. Taking new water out each morning was getting old, so the weather had given me a break from that. Good that it was just feathers, maybe she'll see better now if she is anything like my polish.

How interesting. So possibly 2 eggs fused together to form my NB? I was a bio major in college but forget everything about genetics so I'm no help. I read about the "geep" mix of goat and sheep and that is so cool. It would be interesting to breed her but no rooster here so that won't happen.

On another note has anyone seen this... http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-technology/20131209/US--Cracking.the.Egg/
The title is: Food-tech startups aim to replace eggs and chicken in case the link doesn't work.
I know Bill Gates wants to feed the world but genetically modifying food makes be a bit nervous. It has also shown to take many of the nutrients out of the foods such as the tomatoes we buy in the stores today.
Think I'll pass on those eggs

We're up to 4" of snow today so combined with what we had the other day we've gotten more this year than all of last year!
My girls like to eat the snow... hope that's not a problem

4" of snow? Wow, we just have a lot of rain here. No snow yet.

MsChickenMomma- Love those pics of your chickens. You EE is so plump too! Sunni surely is the queen!

I'm with you. I'd prefer humanely raised chicken and eggs than a plant protein that is supposed to act like something else. It doesn't sound like they are genetically modifying anything yet in that research but I'm sure that's the next step. That GMO stuff makes me mad. For those that don't understand why watch The Future of Food (available on Hulu and possibly On Demand). It's why I spend double what I could on chicken food.

It got in the low 40's today. My mom is staying with us right now and she said the older chickens came out and explored a little. When I went out tonight to put them up (sorry no pic of Boomerang yet, it was dark when I got home) 2 of our oldest girls were roosting on the garden bed. Guess they like the warmer weather too!

Genetic eggs and chicken? :sick

You are lucky to have the 40 degree weather. I'm really wishing for some warmer weather over here. It has been 20 degrees or lower for the past week. The lows at night have been between 9-15 degrees. I feel bad for the girls. They seem to be holding up okay, but I always make sure and squish everyone close together on the roosts so they can keep each other warm. I set Sunni on the porch so she could see the snow, and looked at me with the grumpiest expression as if to say, "This is dumb. Take me back inside." The other girls haven't had access to the snow other than what's on my boots when I walk into the coop. Lilly loves to follow me around the coop to eat the snow off my boots. Im sure if she could actually be in the snow, she wouldn't like it nearly as much. I haven't seen the hawk in about a week, but I'm not taking any chances. Besides, we have about 5 inches of snow, so I don't think the girls would want to go out anyways.

I wish I didn't have to work this week. I would love to take some pictures of the girls in the snow.

Oh wow, that'd be neat chickens in the snow! Can't wait!

I think it was you who posted something about the nest pads, I have those, I bought them from somewhere else online, It was like $20 for 4 with shipping, so not too pad. So far no cracked eggs. They're covered with pine shavings too, so extra padding.

I ordered me an egg skelter from Amazon, was not cheap when you add in shipping, but I really wanted one and I had some bonus points from previous purchases, so really it was free anyway. My husband thinks I am crazy always looking for and getting chicken stuff. It is an addiction. With the bonus points we get from shopping, I'm allowed to do as I please with them.

So lately, only Ash my RIR lays everyday, she skips one day a week. Oreo, my BR lays about the same, but skips 2 days a week. Daisy, the WR was laying almost everyday, but has skipped 3 days now. Big Mama, the BO quit a week ago and is no longer squatting, I think she may be heading into a molt now too. Olivia the EE is done molting, but not laying and Pepper the BR is having a really ugly molt but really just the neck area.

So 1 egg a day? Maybe 2? I need eggs!!!!!! ahhhhhhh!!!!

I hope the little ones start up soon!!! We actually bought eggs over the weekend since family was in for the wedding. I felt like a failure!!! I am hoping these young ones get on the ball....I mean nest and get busy!!!!!! This is my egg desperation plea to the powers that be and to all of my chickens who sneak in at night and read this thread!

Plus the egg skelter should arrive by January and it will look pretty sad with just one egg on it.

Oh what a shame you had to buy eggs. I have the 13 girls and get approx 6 a day. Sometimes 7 sometimes only 4. I'm still getting tons of feathers in the run/coop so some are still molting. I think my EE, BeeBee, is now molting. They look like her feathers but she doesn't look bare at all. But, sheesh, Mother Nature is really screwed up to have the chickens molt in 18 degree weather we're having.
I did get a 3.1 ounce egg yesterday! It was gorgeous but I don't know who laid it.
