So far so good. She was starting to look dehydrated this morning, her waddles were starting to shrivel, but after 2 feedings they are back to normal size. At least we know she's getting some nutrients! I haven't seen any evidence of leakage through the bandages so fingers crossed.

It took me a little while but I finally learned some of the BYC (BackYard Chickens) abbreviations.

it's just so much easier to write BA rather than Black Australorp or GLBW rather than gold laced blue wyandotte! That's a mouthful.
I'm waaaayyyy past my teen years and can barely decipher their lingo but all the threads use these abbreviations so I made myself

Yes, I'm so done with winter. We will be having good weather today, but expecting more snow next week. Ugh. Love all the chicken in the snow pictures.

I am planning to start some tomato and eggplant seeds inside this week. Today is in the 60's, but tomorrow we drop to the 30's again.

Your EE's are just gorgeous, love those colors! Here is a pic of Ellie in the nest box. She does have a lot of orange on her, but with the sun shining right on her, it really made her look a brighter orange. That's the people door view when I was opening it to get eggs. It is so nice to be greeted to a cute friendly face when you're collecting eggs.

What did you get to keep the water unfrozen? I can see the heated metal thingy in one of the pics. I am using a heated dog dish, but it just does not hold enough. I've been looking online, but I see bad reviews for the metal waterers that go on top of the heat base. They say they rust etc. How's yours working out. I need to figure out something else at least for next year so we can go away in the cold months and not have to rush back home to give them water.


Your RIR looks just like mine, Ash. Ash is a friendly one though. The difference in size of your BA's is amazing! Blackie is a super sized one too. Mamie looks like a chick to me compared to mine. I just love the Nancy Brahma, you were so lucky to get one like that, those colors, wow! You have a lot of cool looking chickens.

Boomerang (SLP from Meyer) laid her first egg yesterday!!! She is 36 weeks old. We have one more polish from Meyer that is 5 weeks younger. We don't plan on keeping her but we're not making any effort to get rid of her until we have replacements. So, maybe we'll get to see her first egg too before she goes.

Mona seems to be doing ok. Just gave her some more water and yogurt. I think she'll be on a vitamin water and yogurt diet for awhile. I don't want to introduce any rocks to her crop so it's only soft food for her. We have some ground crumbles that we might mix with water after a few days. She is starting to get dehydrated (her wattles are shrinking) so I've got to step it up on the intake. It's so scary because if she starts leaking again we're putting her down. I don't want to be the cause of it leaking by giving her too much. I was worried because I was thinking DH will be at work while my daughter and I are gone and we'd have to put food and water in there for her and I'm afraid she is so hungry/thirsty that she would pig out and stretch her crop too far. But I just realized he is off all week due to an injury (workman's comp). Yeah!!! He will be able to feed/water her in intervals. Lucky him! He'll also be the one that will have to do the deed if it doesn't work out since we won't be here. Maybe he can eat her before we get back too because I don't think my daughter and I could bring ourselves to (even though we had no problem with our meat birds it feels different with the ones we consider pets).

Sorry to hear about your husband need for worker's comp, but it did help you out though. I hope he's okay too. How's Mona? Oh and congrats on the Polish egg. Buffy, my BLP is squatting like crazy and has been in the nest box once, but I don't thin she has laid one yet. I have 3 white egg layers laying now, the last 3 to start are also white egg layers. So if I get 6 white in one day, then I'll be sure she is laying. Of course, if I catch her in the act I'd know too.

One of my leghorns lays an egg that is not as white as the others, Izzie, my first layer. It is so weird, it looks white until you look at it beside the other white eggs, then you see it is a slightly off white color. I did not know they could do that.

You could put a bit of raw honey in the mix also, it has healing and soothing properties that may help her crop heal faster. If anything, it will give her another source of calories.

Nice info, I need to keep that in mind too. Later reference for the chickens and my family.

It took me awhile as well. If I could not figure out something, I'd just ask. Eventually you learn the abbreviations. Sometimes it is hard to figure out, that;s when I ask to clarify.

I have ordered one of their olive eggers (along with a blue laced red wyandotte and a silver lace polish) that should ship out on June 23. Just wondering if anyone has already received an olive egger and could post a pic of how the little chick looks.

I haven't gotten mine yet but am also curious to see what the olive eggers will look like. I get mine on march 17th alone with 15 others! yay! I love chickens!

It works really well. So far my galvanized waterer that sits on top hasn't rusted but after the weather warms up and I don't need it anymore, I'll go back to 2 plastic waterers and only use the metal one in the cold weather. Hopefully if I dry it and store it away till next winter it will last longer. I did buy an all in one plastic waterer/heater and it didn't work. So rather replace it with the same one I bought the metal one. I didn't hear great things about the plastic one. Sooo, we got more snow. We're breaking all kinds of records here. AND we're getting snow/ice tomorrow night and Sunday is another possibly big snow storm.
