Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

They go through a cabbage every day? That's a lot of cabbage! Last winter the only cabbages I could find were purple cabbages, and the girls all had greenish blueish poop after eating it.   They seemed to like the cabbage though, considering it was gone in two days.

Lol it does seem like a lot of cabbage but they are so used to free ranging and getting all their greens. I don't think I have seen the grass in it seems like forever! I know our grocery store carries it and its under .50 cents a piece (the green ones). I am trying something new right now. Growing fodder! I'm soaking seeds tonight and hopefully will see some results early next week!

Quote: We havent seen grass in forever either. My girls havent been outside in about 4 and a half months now. They had to start their winter early because we had a hawk that was attacking my girls any time they stepped foot outside. Now we have 2-3 ft of snow (the highest being the drifts) and they dont even have a way to get outside now since we just moved and they are in the garage. Winter has been hard for them. Hopefully we get a good week or two of warm weather here pretty soon.

I think mine are starting to get coop fever. My one girl (her new name is lil meanie) will bite me not Peck but BITE me when I go into the coop to show her displeasure of not being able to go outside! I keep the door open to remind her why she can't go outside and she puffs up and gives me the stink eye! Like its my fault the weather is horrible! :idunno lol

Candled again today. We have 10 (out of 18) that we can tell are developing. We threw 3 more away today and 1 is an unknown because of the dark shell. Not too bad for shipped eggs so far. Fingers crossed those 10 make it all the way to hatching!
That's great... what's the expected date of hatching?

My eggs for today! 4 more girls to go! This time last week I had gotten my 2nd egg, week later we have 6! Not sure the mystery layer. Its either a red star, BR, BO, or an EE. 25 weeks yesterday! The EE started up yesterday! I have another who needs to give me a pretty colored egg!!

I love chickens!
Very Pretty!!

It didn't quote your whole quote. We're getting the snow here too. We have a couple inches from yesterdays storm and we're supposed to get hit with a bunch more today and tomorrow. It is coming down now, just hope it just snows and the sleet they are predicting stays away. I do not envy you with your power loss. Spring, where are you?
I hope you didn't get to much ice/sleet. That's the worst. Just can't do anything about it. Snow you can plow, ice, just gotta wait it out.
We have 10 inches so far today and we're supposed to get a little break then it's going to start up again and get 4 more later!
I didn't bring the chicks I'm pet sitting to my house because the people didn't plow their driveway and I just couldn't walk the distance to my car carrying the 36" wooden box with 10 chicks to my car.
The owners are ok with that and they have a very large waterer and tons of food so hopefully they will be ok until Friday afternoon/night. I think if it were my chicks I would have brought them to the chicksitter's house, but that's just crazy ole me.

Does anyone have any advice for me? The girls are bored and sick of being cooped up, and they have started pulling out Ellie's beard and the feathers on the top of Lilly's head. I have tried treats and everything. I don't know what to do to keep them busy until Spring when we can build their permanent coop outside. Considering it is only February and we have 3 ft of snow, I'm not going to be able to build the coop for a while.
I have a suet feeder and I put zucchini, broccoli, pineapple ends etc in there and that keeps them busy for a little while.

I took a few more pictures this morning. Here are a couple of photos, its super cold today, about -9*f when I went out to do chores and take pictures so that's why some of the girls are only standing on one leg.
This is probably my favorite Meyer EE, I think she is so cute with her giant black beard/muff.

This is the blue layer from Meyer, I think it's surprising that she doesn't have the typical muff/beard that I would expect from a blue layer. It was really hard to get good pictures of her, she's incredibly shy and kept dodging under my nest boxes.

This is one of my twenty-some barred rocks, they are fabulous layers.

Silver Laced Wyandotte from Meyer, her lacing is not the greatest but she is still so pretty and a great layer too. I love my Wyandottes and the cold weather hardly seems to phase them.
So pretty!!

Awwww, you're giving me chick fever!! So cute

I hang a cabbage for the girls and they love it! They bat it around getting exercise and then get their greens too! I have to put a new cabbage out every day. I have 8 girls so just to give an example of how much they eat.
I still haven't tried cabbage. My girls don't like lettuce of any kind so I haven't tried cabbage thinking they wouldn't like that either but I should try it.

lol
My one RIR is so mean to me sneaking up on me and biting me and now my Cochin is pecking me hard too. This is a new thing so maybe it's boredom. My RIR may be given away, she's mean to the other girls too, but my cochin is so cute I'll just have to put up with it I guess. But with all my layers of clothes on when I go out there it doesn't hurt to much but come spring/summer it's gonna hurt!!

My fifth and final Meyer Hatchery hen finally laid her first egg. It's my blue Ameraucana and her egg is a nice blue. That rounds out my black copper Maran with her reddish brown speckled eggs, Easter Egger with her green eggs, splash silkie with her tan eggs, and black silkie with her cream eggs!

We've had a lot of snow. We beat records for our area. It has finally stopped snowing and I think it may actually beinf melting some. I had to take snow off the chicken coop roof so it would not fall in on them. I also had to get the snow off all the bird netting throughout their outdoor free range area. They'll being staying in the coop and run until there is a lot more melting. They said it still might snow some more tomorrow. I see sun now and drips of melting snow, so I hope enough melts before it starts up again. They are so unprepared in Charlotte for this, everything is shut down. At least we have plenty of eggs to eat! Just hope that the power stays on.

My chickens are getting cabin fever too. Luckily for us we usually have pretty good weather and they usually free range each day, so far their not beating each other up yet. They just keep clucking at me loudly every time I go out.

I still need to try the cabbage thing too.

Oh and I love this blue egg. There's another one to add to my list!
