Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Moved the babies outside today. I added some welded wire to the inside of the coop to separate them from the big girls. I will move them to the run in a giant dog crate once they are a little bigger.

134 days till my Meyer babies come! Then they will cycle through the grow out merry-go-round. What a fun year of babies!

Well we didn't get the 10 acre house. They went into contract over the weekend. It was a risk we took but we just weren't ready to make an offer yet. Too many other things in play until now. I'm a little disappointed but it wasn't our perfect dream house or land so I think it's for the best. It also means we can take our time on our current house and do the things we want to do to it before putting it on the market. Which means less stress for everyone, especially DH who was stuck with a lot of the work since I'll be out of town the majority of these two weeks. We have another possibility, I like the house and the views and it has a great coop already, but there are no trees on the property, it's on a slope, and only 5 acres. Much more usable acres though. I think we're just going to focus on getting our house ready and keeping an eye on the market for now.

It probably is for the best. Rushing into buying and selling makes it a million times more stressful. I hope you can find exactly what you're looking for.

Uh oh... I don't know how it happened, but Meyer just received an email from my account asking to add an EE to my order. Hmmm...I guess I'll be getting an EE, a lavender orp, a lt brahma, black copper marans. :weee

I would leave them in. Privacy isn't the issue but if you take her out and she loses her place in the pecking order she won't be able to protect the chicks as well. Chickens have been raising chicks in the middle of a flock for ages. They have it under control. :)

That's true. I checked on then when I got home and both looked good. I gave then some water. Mother hen also was teaching her baby to eat. Here's a pic of the chicken tractor I put over the best box which is just a peck n play from murray mcmurray

Thanks all! I did want to mention that our cat has met the chicks (especially the Buff Orpington on my lap many times and all he does is sniff them and turn his head then reach out to my other hand (away from the chick) to ask to be petted, if they move too much he hops off as if intimidated. Right after that pic was taken he backed up a couple feet. He's never been a hunter and is intimidated by their beaks and wings but he does like watching them throw their window, just like the wrens outside. Still would never leave them alone unsupervised. But I've been giving him lots of love for being so well behaved.

That's great, it is so nice to finally get them outside. Sounds like you'll have more inside again soon, just enough time to get all the feather dust cleaned up before the new ones arrive!

Great pic! What a cute pup!

Sorry that it did not work out. The other property sounds nice too. We live on a slope and it is working out fine. The city is very close to being done with the creek work, I'll have to take pics once they complete the work. We live on almost 1 acre and it is plenty of room for us and the chickens. 5 acres would be awesome, I'd love to be able to have 4 footed fluffy pets too. We do have our chow, but goats, sheep, even a horse would be neat to have, but not here since it is just 1 acre. Maybe the extra time that you have to sell now will let you bring up the price a little with all the improvements.

Oh wow!! Must of been elves!!

Those elves had some good selections too!

Cute pictures. I love the peck and play, what a neat idea, I've never seen one before. Mama hen is doing a great job! Do you think anymore eggs will hatch or is it too late for them?

Thanks for the pepper info. I just gave them the yogurt yesterday so I'll wait until Friday to do the pepper. I don't want to overwhelm them with too much new stuff.
Hope your DH and DD are feeling better today. I don't like pain meds either. They make me loopy and still have pain!

I'm absolutely no expert but my guess is #2 is a girl. Keep us posted
I can't believe it.... I put my RIR on craigslist this morning and 2 people responded by this afternoon and they both want her
ya.gif
I called the first one that responded and she lives 5 minutes away... who knew so many of us have chickens! AND the best part is, if she doesn't get along with her other 3 girls, she is going to give her to the guy about 30 minutes away that takes unwanted roos and hens and use her as a breeder because he wants a mature RIR! So glad she's getting another chance. She's coming to get her tomorrow!!

I think you'll be forgiven for building on Easter... it's for chickens after all and God loves all creatures

I think our coop is facing East and it works out well.

thx :)

Best of luck on the house!! 10 acres will be amazing!!!

Oh my goodness ... great pics!!! Love the cat and chick :)
Glad to help. My DD is doing better, she was put on an antibiotic for strep and just finished it yesterday. My DH is still suffering but less and less each day. It's like having another kid around when he is sick, but he is such a good guy, I'll help him out until he recovers.

That is awesome that you have 2 people that will take the RIR. I can't wait to hear how your flock does without her around. We have a new leader in our coop now, Olivia our EE puts the younger 16 in their place. I noticed that she would break up fights and tried to control Daisy, but now you can tell that she is the one in charge. It used to be Oreo the BR, but not anymore. My first flock of 5 are the leaders though and they get to eat first before the others although there are a lot of brave ones that sneak in to eat too now that Daisy is gone.

Crud... I was out most of today and came back to what looks like an egg was eaten in the nest. Just a small pile of wet, goopy wood shavings in a nest. I think that's one of my biggest fears. I got 7 eggs the past few days and it seems like it should be a bit more. Double CRUD.
I've had that happen. I wouldn't worry too much unless you see a lot of broken eggs and empty shells. Part of our problem was my huge BA sitting on a nest full of eggs and cracking them by accident. I just collected them more often for awhile and eventually I think she figured out how to be more careful. The golf balls are a good idea too. I have always had one golf ball and 3 wooden eggs in our nest boxes. Also check the nest boxes more often and clean them out and add more nesting material too. I use nest pads on the bottom of the shavings as well for more cushion.

I also think the fighting over the nest boxes and Daisy chasing them off the eggs caused some to crack and break too. Since she's been gone, we have not had anymore cracked eggs or eggs on the ground either. Our dog Maxie is not happy that there are no more cracked eggs since she always got those. She loves them and raw eggs are good for dogs.
