Holy cow!!! I sell to one person right now. She pays $10 for 3 dz and I deliver!! I'm going to raise it when my new girls start to lay and I can sell more. I was thinking of $5 dz I have a farmers market that comes to a parking lot every Sat. and I want to check out their eggs. Both for price and to pick their brain. I'd like to buy a dz to see what the yolks look like too if they 'say' they free range.

I'm kind of in the camp that part of the friendliness could just the chicks personality. I spent a lot of time with a few of mine and they were friendly and then just turned a bit standoffish for some reason. My friend who just got the 14 chicks at 6 weeks old were most likely never touched/played with for the first 6 weeks but I was over there today and 5 of them were climbing all over me and couldn't get enough attention! One hopped on my leg as I was crouched, then to my arm and just settled in and started to fall asleep!!
I'm going to post a pic of that one because we can't figure out the breed. It's a bantam and maybe they are friendlier. But all 3 of her BLRW and 2 SS are super sweet. The rest are kind of standoffish.
Aww, the chicks from that awful place? That's too sweet! Please do post a pic. I would love BLRW and SS, I keep hearing great things about the SS. I got the husband to come out in the run with me yesterday evening, Baby and Victoria, his Dorking, were both climbing on his shoulders and pecking at his earrings. After he left Victoria came over to me, hopped up on my shoulder but instead of walking on me she settled down right next to my face contently and stayed there until I told her I had to go. She's a sweet one for sure.

Speaking of SS, last night the husband and I were watching Season 2 of the Walking Dead (first time for him, I've watched 3 seasons) they showed the chickens on the farm they are staying on temporarily, there were definitely Speckled Sussex hens and Buff Orpingtons (poor Buffs got fed to the zombies!) but there was also the rear of a blue hen and a splash rooster maybe Orpingtons as well. There were some chicks and few week olds too, it was mentioned their mother was gone, black and/or barred I think. Its just funny seeing that now, definitely something I didn't tune into a year ago.

Oh and I would definitely pay $5 a dozen. Heck I payed $5 at the store for half a dozen organic, even though there were cheaper options, just because it came in the clear plastic half dozen container and I figured those would be nice for gifts. I know you can order them separate but I needed eggs anyway. Lately I've been getting our eggs from this Fresh Fork Market food truck and CSA, my sister and mom have a share and I go with them to get local meat, pastured pork and bacon, yes please! but also because the family in our town haven't had their egg sign up in over a month, just veggies. And that's where I'm heading off to now.

I believe it was just the other day somebody said they weren't sure if this is a support group or enabling group. I agree with whoever that was!

I've been searching for a backup plan. (Whose idea was that?!?!?!) oh, I found three people I'd love to get eggs from! But I have two weeks to get eggs so they will hatch when my next order arrives. I must have lost my mind! I guess if my pullets don't go out by Monday, I have no other choice. HAHA!

The seller contacted me and said one of them was sneezing. She didn't send them. This is so crazy. We are waiting till next week to see how she is or possibly substitute another. This is most definitely a test of patience.
Eek. I'm not sure if I would be a bit concerned they have something that they could give to your other birds. I'm know you are going to quarantine but I'm not sure if I would want to deal with sick birds. Quite the dilemma and just my 2 cents worth about 1 cent!

I guess it is good that she is willing to work with you. I don't blame you for not wanting to start your search over or settle for a different color. You had your heart set on these two. I guess at this point, you have to believe that, if it was meant to be, it will be. I hope it works out for you!

@NotableNancy and @trsturself , I loved reading about the differences in your birds and your friend's birds and how their interactions with you have changed over time. I guess there are a lot of variables that affect how the girls interact with you. Very interesting!

I, also, find it very interesting how, in the same breed, one hen looks like it should have been laying for weeks while another is just starting to get her wattles. Her is photo of my Dominiques side by side.

Even though Desdemona is a bit blurry, you can see the difference in development. Melissa, the one that is more advanced, has always been the smaller of the two. Isn't that crazy?

Two days in a row, Jed (the most mature RIR) gave what I could only imagine was the loudest egg song possible and no egg. Is that normal? Have any of you experienced a false alarm like that?

I looked under the coop and in the run and there is no sign of an egg anywhere. I imagine if someone was eating the eggs, there would be at least a wet spot on the ground from spilled egg whites. But, I have not seen anything. Is she just practicing her song?? It is a mystery to me.
My 2 BA are like that. One is smaller and sleek and the other's nickname is Big Momma which pretty much says it all! My 2 RIR looked almost identical except for one had a much bigger comb but that one laid second!
Yes, lots of false alarms here. Still. Even though they are 14 months old. And sometimes one will start baawwking and others will join in and I think there's a few eggs out there and nope, nothing.
Yes, I think they are laughing behind my back every time!

LOL, I remember that from the Walking Dead!! Every show I see that has chickens I stop paying attention and watch them.
Yes, the chicks from that awful place. AND she waited until they were 6 weeks old to get them (paid more $$ too) so she wouldn't get a rooster because she has 2 and if she gets one she feels obligated to keep it bec. she couldn't live with herself if it was killed just because it was a rooster. Well, yup, she got a rooster!!! She was supposed to get 2 purebred Ameraucana and only got 1 and it certainly looks like a cockerel! Very pick comb. I broke the news to her and she's so funny, she thought it was such a pretty color pink and had absolutely no idea that meant rooster!!! We're not speaking of it now; she's hoping if we don't speak of it then he will turn back into a she!! AND he is a gorgeous Splash Ameraucana!!! I think she could actually sell him. So, now she won't get any blue eggs :( She did get one EE by accident though so hopefully a green one. Glad Baby and Victoria are both still sweet! How old are they? I'm sure you said but I forget. (being one of the eldest one in this group, I'm allowed

along with the rest of us. I actually almost called Meyer to add another chick to my order... just in case I lose one in transit!!!

OK... mystery here.... does anyone have any guesses as to what breed? It is probably about 8 weeks old and is very small. Bantam something I guess...
very light colored legs. Gray/blue body with gold on the neck and very cuddly!

And here is what I guess is a Splash Ameraucana Cockerel... Agree?

little one from above is in bottom of pic

Yes, that is def a splash roo. The other, I dont know. A mix of some sort maybe. And the alpaca are awesome! They almost don't look real because they are so cute!

Thank you all for every kind word. This has been rough, but when I step back, life is good. Hopefully the new girls will be healthy enough to travel by Monday. Otherwise, I will be choosing another color pullet. Either black or mauve. Originally, I didn't want black because Peppy is black and would produce all black babies. But mauve is so different, perhaps it is a good option. I really wanted to stick to BBS, but I guess we'll see what happens. Thankfully the seller has been sending me a message just about everyday to keep me updated. Not knowing was definitely worse. I may just have to look around a little more, just in case

At least the communication has been good this time! I remember the worry thinking they had been shipped and not knowing where they were!!! Hopefully she is just uber protective of her chicks. I know I would be!
