Waiting for chicks is so exciting but full of anxiety! Why do we do it?!
Cuz we are crazy chicken folk!

My hatch attempt was a complete failure. Thankfully my little Limabean is sitting on some eggs. So far she's doing great. I think we are on day 5 or 6 so they'd be due around April 7th. Can't wait to see what she hatches!

What happend to your hatch?

Think it was a couple low temp days. The weather has been so up and down. Most look like the made it till day 15 or so. Three looked like they almost started to break through. Im totally getting a better incubator my next try.

New Meyer chick pics anyone??

I have some new pics.

My Meyer girls are two weeks and three weeks old today.

First the three week olds (They are Blue Splash Marans.):

Aggie

Peppermint

(Looks like Peppermint's wearing bell-bottoms.

)

Then the two week olds:

Blossom (Blue Laced Red Wyandotte)

Corabeth (Olive Egger)

Elizabeth (Rhode Island Red)

Group shots:

(There is an Appenzeller Spitzhauben in the middle there that did not come from Meyer.)

AND, it is not her birthday today, either. But we don't want her to feel left out.

Her name is Gloria, and she will be three weeks old on Wednesday. She was hatched by a guy who buys hatching eggs off eBay. He's not allowed to keep chickens where he lives, but he has fun hatching chicks and selling them.

Aggie tried to take a dust bath on the towel!

Then Peppermint copied her.

And then I've been a little concerned about Blossom, because she is only half the size of the other two-week-old chicks. She doesn't seem to be sickly. Then I got to thinking maybe I got a bantam on accident, but Meyer doesn't offer Bantam BLRW on their site, so I doubt she is that. But doesn't she seem small to you guys?

She seems healthy enough. Most of them had pasty butt on and off for a while, including her. But they have all gotten over that now. But I noticed that even her wings are smaller, with less feathering. Maybe Wyandottes are a slow developing breed?

Such pretty girls! Love the names, especially Corabeth, I haven't heard that one before!

I love it when they practice dust bathing! So cute!

The Spitz adorable with her mohawk. Interesting that he hatches just to sell, business must be good, I would be scared they wouldn't all sell if I could't keep them.

As for the Wyandotte, that is strange. Wyandottes aren't known to mature fast, but neither are Marans. Still I wouldn't worry much. Just make sure she's eating and drinking well. Do you have some nutrients to add to their water and/or probiotics? I use Meyer's VitalPack every day and Grow2Max probiotics every three days, adding Apple Cider Vinegar on one of the other days.

I have the opposite concern, well more a curiousity. Can anyone who has raised Meyer's Brahmas with other breeds of chicks comment on if they were significantly larger from the beginning. I know Brahmas are one of the largest breeds but I was under the impression that hatchery Brahmas weren't all that much big than other heavy breeds like Opringtons. I remember someone saying their new Lavender Orp was bigger than their Brahma. I'm raising her with a White Rock and Welsummer which are nice dual purpose breeds but the Brahma feels twice as heavy and looks quite hefty. I mean I think her stature is fabulous but I'm just hoping we don't have a little cockerel on our hands.

11 Days

I don't have many good side by sides but you can see how much wider she is below

@Finnie cute chicks

Ok so I have caught the hatching bug and busted out my two bators. Plugged one in and am running it to see how it does with no eggs and what temps/humidity it holds. Then will be putting 42 eggs from our Meyer mixed flock. Have no idea who is laying what eggs so hatching will be a complete surprise. Can't wait, will post updates here.

We have a Farm Innovators pro 4200 with a fan and turner, also have the next step down model, there is no turner.

@autumnhearth Your girl looks right on to me! Mine were wider and feathered in slower. It's a little scary, but I wouldn't worry about her unless you see a red comb. My Olive had me worried for a few weeks. Her she is at about a week and a half:

And yes, my orp is the biggest, but the brahmas are bigger than everyone else.

@COChix can't wait to see what hatches!! I'm hoping Limabean can hatch something too. She's getting picked on some, but she hasn't given up. She'll be a tough little momma.
